The future of Auston Matthews has become a major talking point after the Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. However, newly appointed general manager John Chayka believes the franchise centerpiece remains fully committed to bringing success back to Toronto.
Following several conversations with Matthews, including a visit to the star forward’s offseason home in Arizona, Chayka expressed confidence that the captain still views Toronto as the place where he wants to win.
Chayka Offers Encouraging Update on Matthews
Speaking at the NHL Scouting Combine, Chayka described Matthews as a player who takes pride in leading the organization despite a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
The Maple Leafs finished 32-36-14 and failed to qualify for the postseason, ending a playoff streak that began shortly after Matthews arrived as the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. The disappointing season led to sweeping organizational changes, including the departures of former general manager Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube.
According to Chayka, Matthews remains engaged in discussions about the club’s direction and continues to embrace his role as captain during this transition period.
Organizational Changes Continue Across Toronto
Since taking over hockey operations, Chayka and senior adviser Mats Sundin have focused on meeting with players, coaches, and staff members throughout the organization.
The new leadership group is also conducting an extensive coaching search. Chayka revealed that approximately 55 candidates were contacted during the initial phase, with roughly 20 advancing to deeper conversations. The organization has not established a timeline for making a hire, emphasizing patience as it searches for the next long-term leader behind the bench.

Toronto’s offseason outlook brightened considerably when the club won the first overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. Chayka has already begun evaluating several elite prospects, including highly regarded forward Gavin McKenna.
The Penn State standout impressed Toronto’s leadership group both on and off the ice. Chayka said the organization conducted extensive background research and felt comfortable with McKenna after reviewing an off-ice incident for which prosecutors later dropped the charges.
While trade possibilities have been discussed internally, Chayka indicated the Maple Leafs are currently focused on a small group of top prospects and could ultimately use the pick rather than move it.
Matthews Remains Central to Toronto’s Plans
Despite speculation surrounding Matthews’ long-term future after an injury-shortened season, Chayka’s comments suggest the organization still views the four-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner as the face of the franchise.
Matthews, who owns Toronto’s all-time goals record, finished last season with 53 points in 60 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. As the Maple Leafs reshape their front office, coaching staff, and roster strategy, the organization’s message appears clear: Matthews remains at the center of its plans to return to Stanley Cup contention.
