Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, and now Raider, Jimmy Garoppolo has called out the “weird” and chaotic 49ers situation.

In a surprising turn of events, coach Kyle Shanahan named Sam Darnold the backup QB to Brock Purdy, not the expected Trey Lance. Purdy, who shone during the 49ers playoff run last year, took the league by storm with his performance. This allowed the team to let Garoppolo walk and sign with the Raiders, while Purdy took his place.

With the former failed starter with the Jets, Sam Darnold, being named the backup, it left Lance in the dust. In a move that shocked the football world, Lance was traded to the Cowboys last weekend for a 2024 fourth-round pick. And now, Garoppolo has called out the 49ers’ culture and the way they run operations.

“Weird situation,” Garoppolo said. “Been a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco. I’ll just leave it at that. But I’m happy Trey got another shot. I’m happy he’s getting to Dallas, gets another opportunity and hopefully things work out there.”

Garoppolo notably did not get into details about the “weird situations.” However, one could only imagine the turmoil running rampant through that organization. After reaching the Super Bowl in 2020, but losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, it has been all but downhill for the Niners.

But now, the West Coast squad is hopeful that Brock Purdy can lead them into a new era of success. Garoppolo, on the other hand, looks to do the same for his Raiders following the departure of Derek Carr. Either way, the 2023 NFL season is lining up to be an interesting debacle lined with rampant storylines across the league.
