The Minnesota Golden Gophers Football team had a disappointing year last season. Playing in the weaker Big Ten West Division, the Gophers had numerous opportunities to seize the division title. But big defensive miscues on crucial plays in marquee games, and an inconsistency in their passing attack proved to be their downfall.

So, it was obvious that changes had to made to upgrade the air attack. The incumbent quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis was going to have to fight to keep his position. He subsequently transferred to Rutgers University but not before the Gophers brought in their new gunslinger.

Brosmer to the Gophers

Max Brosmer from New Hampshire University would be given the reins of the Minnesota offense. He came to the Gophers through the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. And he arrived with some fanfare.

Brosmer was a three-year starter for the Wildcats. In 2023, he was the leader in FCS Football with 3349 passing yards. And he was second in the FCS in touchdown passes with 29. Brosmer was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award which goes to the best player in the FCS. The award eventually went to South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski.

Brosmer is the Whole Package

What kind of quarterback are the Gophers getting with Max Brosmer? I have witnessed Brosmer throwing twice now and I can tell you with certainty that he possesses a rocket launcher throwing arm. Both at the Gophers’ Pro Day and at their second practice, the young quarterback was obviously comfortable making all kinds of throws.

He’s a mobile quarterback who rushed for five touchdowns last season. And his leadership skills are off the charts. The Gophers think so highly of him, he was named a captain on the team before he has even played a down.

Potent Gopher Offense

And Brosmer should have some offensive weapons to work with this upcoming season. Receiver Daniel Jackson brought his A-game to the field last season. He led the Gophers in receptions 59, receiving yards 831, and receiving touchdowns 8. In recognition of his play, he was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.

And super freshman Darius Taylor is back healthy. Taylor rushed for 799 yards in 2023 and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times in his first year with the Gophers. Minnesota also returns four of their five starting offensive lineman from a year ago. They are led by the talented bookend duo of Aireontae Ersery and Quinn Carroll.

Gophers’ head coach P.J. Fleck is excited to turn his new quarterback loose on the rest of the Big Ten. Brosmer should provide the U with a more balanced offense, while also lighting up the skies with some of his ariel rainbows. I can’t wait for the season to start.
