The Indianapolis Colts released veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II on Thursday, ending a nine-year run with one of the franchise’s most respected defensive leaders.
Moore, who recently requested a trade, had been the team’s longest-tenured defensive back and was set to earn $10 million during the 2026 season. The move frees up more than $7 million in salary cap space for Indianapolis.
General manager Chris Ballard previously confirmed the organization explored trade possibilities after Moore expressed a desire for a change. Despite the split, Ballard emphasized the mutual respect between both sides, describing the discussions as professional and respectful.
Moore Leaves Strong Legacy in Indianapolis
After arriving as a waiver claim in 2017, Moore developed into one of the NFL’s top slot cornerbacks and became a key piece of the Colts’ defense. He started 111 games for Indianapolis and totaled 21 interceptions, 11.5 sacks, and six forced fumbles during his tenure.
Moore earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and also became known for his impact off the field. He received three Walter Payton Man of the Year nominations because of his extensive community involvement in Indianapolis.
A potential factor in Moore’s departure may have been the Colts’ evolving defensive philosophy. Indianapolis is expected to lean more heavily into aggressive man-to-man coverage following the additions of Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward, while Moore built his reputation as an elite zone defender.
Nasir Adderley’s Comeback Ends Quickly
The Colts also released safety Nasir Adderley only weeks after signing him in April. Adderley had attempted an NFL comeback after stepping away from football following the 2023 season.
The former second-round pick originally entered the league with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 and started 44 games during his first four seasons. However, Indianapolis’ crowded safety room likely made it difficult for him to secure a roster spot.
The Colts strengthened the position during the offseason by adding veterans Jonathan Owens and Juanyeh Thomas while also drafting A.J. Haulcy. Second-year safety Hunter Wohler is also expected to compete for a significant role alongside Cam Bynum.
Indianapolis Continues Defensive Reshaping
Thursday’s roster decisions reflect a broader defensive overhaul underway in Indianapolis. In addition to releasing Moore and Adderley, the Colts waived linebacker John Bullock after adding linebacker prospects during the draft.
With rookie minicamp beginning this weekend, Indianapolis appears focused on getting younger and reshaping its defense ahead of the 2026 season.
