The Denver Broncos have agreed to a five-year contract extension with general manager George Paton, keeping him with the franchise through the 2030 season.

Paton entered the final year of the six-year deal he signed when Denver hired him in 2021, but the organization moved early to secure long-term stability in the front office. Team owner and CEO Greg Penner praised Paton’s leadership and his collaborative relationship with head coach Sean Payton in announcing the extension.

The move solidifies one of the NFL’s most respected front-office partnerships after Denver emerged as one of the league’s top contenders over the past two seasons.

Broncos’ Turnaround Under Paton and Payton

Since Sean Payton’s arrival in 2023, the Broncos have transformed into a consistent contender. Denver has averaged 11 wins per season during that stretch, including a 14-3 campaign last year that earned the AFC’s top seed before a loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

The turnaround became even more impressive considering the franchise had to recover from the costly Russell Wilson trade and absorb a record-setting dead cap hit following his release in 2024.

Paton and Payton successfully rebuilt the roster despite limited draft capital, helping the Broncos end a lengthy playoff drought and capture their first AFC West title in a decade.

Draft Success Helped Shape Denver’s Rise

Paton’s drafting has played a major role in Denver’s resurgence. During his tenure, the Broncos selected several players who developed into All-Pro talents, including Pat Surtain II, Quinn Meinerz, Nik Bonitto and Marvin Mims Jr.

Surtain became the centerpiece of Denver’s defense and earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024. Meanwhile, quarterback Bo Nix quickly emerged as the franchise signal-caller after leading Denver to playoff appearances in each of his first two seasons.

The Broncos also strengthened the roster through free agency and trades, adding players such as Zach Allen, Talanoa Hufanga and Jaylen Waddle.

Denver Commits to Long-Term Stability

The extension reflects Denver’s belief that Paton remains central to the franchise’s long-term direction. Before arriving in Denver, Paton spent more than a decade in the front office of the Minnesota Vikings and built a strong reputation as one of the league’s top evaluators.

Now paired long-term with Sean Payton, Paton will continue overseeing a Broncos organization that has rapidly reestablished itself among the NFL’s elite teams.
