The ongoing split between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers appears no closer to resolution.
Aiyuk posted a cryptic video on Instagram over the weekend that many interpreted as a direct message to the 49ers organization, suggesting the team is reluctant to release him because of what he could accomplish elsewhere. While he never mentioned the club by name, the comments represented his strongest public remarks yet regarding a dispute that has stretched on for nearly a year.
Cryptic Message Fuels More Speculation
Accompanied by the caption “If you scared just say dat,” Aiyuk spent more than a minute discussing people he described as being afraid to face consequences for their actions.
“The truth is, they scared,” Aiyuk said in the video. “What they not gonna say is ‘BA suck at football’ because they know how I get.”
The remarks appeared to suggest that Aiyuk believes his football ability remains unquestioned despite the off-field issues and contract dispute that have dominated headlines. He also implied that those involved are worried about the possibility of him thriving with another organization.
Although Aiyuk avoided directly naming the 49ers, the timing and context left little doubt about who many observers believe was the target of his comments.
Relationship With San Francisco Continues to Deteriorate
The conflict between Aiyuk and the 49ers intensified after the team voided the remaining guaranteed money in his contract following disputes over his rehabilitation process after suffering a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in October 2024.
San Francisco later placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list after he stopped reporting to team facilities. Since then, both sides have appeared headed toward an eventual separation.
General manager John Lynch previously indicated that Aiyuk likely had played his final game for the franchise, but the 49ers have yet to find a trade partner willing to acquire the veteran receiver.
The organization has also shown little interest in simply releasing him, preferring not to allow another team to acquire a talented player without compensation.
Commanders Remain a Frequently Mentioned Destination
Throughout the offseason, signs have continued to point toward the Washington Commanders as Aiyuk’s preferred landing spot.
The receiver maintains a close friendship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former teammate at Arizona State. Aiyuk’s recent social media activity has only fueled those rumors, including photos featuring Washington gear and the fact that Daniels and the Commanders remain among the few accounts he follows on Instagram.
Whether a trade to Washington is realistic remains unclear, but league speculation surrounding that connection has persisted for months.
More Questions Than Answers Remain
Aiyuk’s social media comments arrived just days after news surfaced that a misdemeanor arrest warrant had been issued in connection with a speeding-related incident near Levi’s Stadium that was documented in a video he posted online last year.
Meanwhile, the contractual standoff remains unresolved.
Because Aiyuk currently resides on the reserve/left squad list, the 49ers are under no immediate pressure to release him. If he reports to the team, passes a physical and resumes participation, San Francisco would eventually need to make a decision regarding his future.
Until then, both sides appear locked in a stalemate, with Aiyuk’s latest comments serving as another reminder that the relationship between the receiver and the 49ers remains deeply fractured.
