In an effort to fill their gap at quarterback, the Minnesota Vikings today acquired Joshua Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals. Dobbs gives the Vikings another option at quarterback after starter Kirk Cousins went down with a torn right Achillies Tendon. Cousins has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
To acquire Dobbs, the Vikings traded a 2024 sixth-round draft pick to Arizona. Along with Dobbs, Minnesota will also receive a 2024 seventh round selection. This is a conditional pick that could become a sixth rounder.
Rookie Jaren Hall is expected to start the next game for the Vikings as they face the Falcons on Sunday in Atlanta. The injured Nick Mullens and practice squader Sean Mannion are the Vikings remaining internal options at quarterback.
The Cardinals benched Dobbs after Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Rookie Clayton Tune has been declared the starter for Arizona’s next game Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Also, Kyler Murray is expected back soon after missing Arizona’s first eight games after surgery to repair a torn ACL.
Dobbs, a seven-year veteran, threw for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns, and six interceptions for the Cardinals this season. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said that Dobbs could be ready to play this week, but the consensus is that Hall will be the starter for at least the Atlanta game.
Other Vikings Trade News
In other Vikings trade news, the team announced today that they have traded guard Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2024 sixth round pick. Cleveland had been out of action due to foot injury. He has been replaced by veteran Dalton Risner who has played well in his stead. Cleveland was also in the final year of his rookie contract. Minnesota opted to get something for him now instead of potentially losing him after the season in free agency.
