Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance shared his thoughts on being traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance mentioned that his time with the 49ers didn’t go as he expected or as most people thought it would.

“It’s not what I had in mind, and I don’t think many expected it, but I believe things happen for a reason. I think there’s a purpose behind me being here,” Lance told reporters.

From 49ers to Cowboys

Lance, who was chosen as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, was traded from the 49ers to the Cowboys. This move happened after he lost the backup quarterback position to veteran Sam Darnold. The Cowboys acquired him in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick.

Trey Lance’s Excitement Over His Move to the Cowboys

Lance expressed his excitement about joining the Cowboys and how it brought a big smile to his face.

“I tried not to set expectations, but when I heard ‘Cowboys,’ it really made me happy. It felt a bit unreal, considering the rich history of this organization,” Lance said.

The 49ers traded multiple first-round picks to select Lance in the draft. He played in eight games over two seasons, with only four of those as a starter, throwing for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. Lance acknowledged that hearing he would be the backup was tough for him.

“I’m trying to move forward, but it took some time to accept. It was a conversation I didn’t want to have, but that’s how things turned out. I have a lot of respect and gratitude for everyone at the 49ers, including the coaching staff, teammates, and everyone I spent time with over the years. It was tough, but I had to focus on what’s next,” Lance explained.

Adapting to a New Role

Now with the Cowboys, Lance is the third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. He’s eager to learn from Prescott, head coach Mike McCarthy, and the organization.

“I’m excited to soak up knowledge from Coach McCarthy and the coaching staff. It’s been great to be in these meetings. Learning a new offence and being around the team has been refreshing. I feel like I’m learning a lot,” Lance said.

Welcome from the Cowboys

Lance also mentioned that he’s received a warm welcome from Prescott and the team. Despite a season-ending ankle injury last season, Lance assured that he’s healthy now.
