The Oklahoma Sooners’ offseason strategy has been defined by a focused effort to elevate the offense from “merely avoiding being a weakness” to a consistent, high-powered unit that complements their already elite defense. The offseason has been heavily defined by a concerted effort to address the offensive inconsistencies that plagued the team during the latter half of the 2025 season.
Offensive Recovery and Growth
Senior quarterback John Mateer, who played through a significant thumb injury for much of 2025, has spent the offseason recovering. He has focused on improving his throwing mechanics and footwork, aiming to return to his early-season 2025 form.
After losing DeMarco Murray to the Kansas City Chiefs, the coaching staff added Deland McCullough as the new running backs coach. He brings extensive college and NFL exp experience, with the goal of improving a rushing attack that struggled to maintain consistency last season.
The 2025 run game averaged a lackluster 3.5 yards per carry, a figure the staff deems unacceptable. The strategy is to increase efficiency to roughly 4.5 yards per carry. This involves utilizing a deep rotation of backs, particularly Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock, to take pressure off the passing game and control the tempo of contests. The Sooners retained both Blaylock and Robinson. Despite both players dealing with lingering injuries that limited their spring participation, they are expected to be fully healthy for fall camp.
The team also bolstered its roster via the transfer portal and recruiting to provide more depth and talent around Mateer.
Get Over Here
As far as the wide receivers go, Parker Livingstone transferred from Texas and Trell Harris came over from Virginia Tech. They joined the squad to complement returning starter Isaiah Sategna III.
While the Sooners were statistically excellent in the red zone in 2025, they struggled to get tight ends into the end zone. The focus here is on utilizing new, larger personnel to create mismatches, converting field goals into touchdowns. The roster added Hayden Hansen, Rocky Beers, and Jack Van Dorselaer to address previous depth and talent issues at that position.
Recognizing that line play was a bottleneck, the staff focused on both experience and depth. The incoming group includes E’Marion Harris from Arkansas at tackle, Caleb Nitta out of Western Kentucky at center, and Peyton Joseph by way of Georgia Tech. The development of younger linemen, particularly left tackle Michael Fasusi, is also a high priority for the 2026 campaign.
In summary, the Sooners are betting that continuity on the coaching staff, a fully healthy Mateer, and an upgraded supporting cast at the skill positions will allow them to maintain their defensive excellence while transforming the offense into a championship-caliber unit.
