Super League

Picture this. You’re an amateur college football player.

You play for some of the biggest football programs in some of the biggest Power-5 conferences in the country.

After years of working for free, you’re finally allowed to make NIL off your brand. But remember, the NCAA is corrupt, nonetheless.

Reimagined College Football “Super League”

What if I told you, however, this could all change. The NCAA can be demolished, but with one super solution.

College football can be forward-thinking and usher in a new era. Above all, the NFL runs this league, where players can be paid salaries.

Welcome to the Reimagined 80-team Super League.

What Constitutes this New League?

It’s probably 30 years too late, but in other words, better late than never. This league might be the last-ditch effort to save college football and take them away from the NCAA.

For instance, this new league must have a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for all employers. Similar to the CBA and the NFL player’s union, this group must initialize rules regarding how players are picked.

To begin things, the NCAA should impose an NFL-like salary cap where each team is limited to a certain pool of money they can spend. This would potentially get rid of the NCAA’s system of NIL and transfer portal.

Above all things, this league would have to figure out if they want to keep a key element from the NCAA, which is high school recruiting.

They have been recruiting as long as college football has been an amateur sport. Additionally, it used to cost nothing for the players, but out-of-pocket money for the NCAA before the legalization of NIL in 2021.

But otherwise, this league wants to resemble more of a minor league for the NFL. This means outdated practices like recruiting, that could be placed with a traditional NFL practice.

In other words, there would be a College draft adopted into the league, where players can be picked randomly from other high schools.

Pros of Reimagined Super League Brand of College Football

I like the idea that the best of the best would get to play each other in the regular season. We would get a chance to see exotic matchups, i.e. (Syracuse vs. Georgia), (Notre Dame vs. Ole Miss), (Colorado vs Alabama), etc.

Additionally, the talent pool of NFL caliber players on the 80 teams would be remarkable. Can you imagine more Syracuse players being drafted because they would be playing an aggressive schedule?

I like the idea of the NFL running it, but I also like the idea of having a salary cap and trades.

Cons of Reimagined Super League Brand of College Football

While the NFL would take control over the league, it would take some getting used to the idea of “professionalizing college sports.”

The NCAA model is already a semi-pro model since the transfer portal was introduced in 2018, and NIL in 2021.

It’s very difficult to fully compensate players by salary when they are still amateur athletes, however, I get nobody wants to work for free.

Many things still have to be looked at and decided. After that, it sure will be interesting what the outcome will be determined in the future.

Should the CFB indeed dissolve with the NCAA and turn into a “Super League”?
