Following a 6-6 regular season, and earning a bowl game, Rutgers University announces the extension of head coach, Greg Schiano. Rutgers will be playing in the Pinstripe Bowl later this December. This is the first Bowl Game for the University ever since the 2014 Quick Lane Bowl. In 2020 the Scarlet Knights did play in one, but with five wins getting in with their GPA average. Here is a look at Schiano’s contract, and why he’s earned it.

Greg Schiano’s Contract

When Rutgers hired Schiano, for the second time, following the 2019 season, he signed an eight-year $32 million contract, according to ESPN. With this new contract, Schiano is set to make $6.25 million in 2024. While the Scarlet Knights may not be the most winning team in college football, Schiano emphasizes culture, and it is clear that the program is growing under his reign.

Greg Schiano’s Time With Rutgers

Coming off of a 6-6 record, some may wonder what warrants this extension. Since returning to Rutgers, while it may be slow, Schiano has been causing constant improvement. The Scarlet Knights’ defense has been keeping the team in games against competitive opponents. The offense needs to step up, but have had their moments.

Rutgers has been a part of 12 Bowl games in total. Six of those are under Schiano’s coaching. He is a leader who has brought the team slow success. In 2022, Rutgers won their first home game against a Big Ten opponent for the first time since 2017. This season, Rutgers defeated two at home. It may be little steps, but it is growth.

The next big game for Rutgers will be during the Pinstripe Bowl on December 28th. The Scarlet Knights will face the Miami Hurricanes. It will not be easy, but expect them to put up a fight. The Big Ten will only get more competitive through the expansion, but the University feels that Schiano is just the leader that they need.
