Christian Watson delivered one of the most remarkable performances of the Green Bay Packers’ season Thursday night, returning from a hospital visit to help his team secure a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
The Packers wide receiver suffered a chest injury while making a 53-yard catch in the second quarter and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Medical tests revealed a broken rib but no signs of internal bleeding, allowing Watson to return to Lambeau Field and rejoin his teammates in the third quarter.
Watson finished with eight receptions for 113 yards, leading all receivers in the game. His return drew a loud ovation from the crowd and left his teammates impressed by his determination to continue playing.
“I think it shows resiliency, I think it shows toughness and I think it just shows the love that he has for this team,” Packers safety Xavier McKinney said.
Watson Returns After Hospital Evaluation
Watson sustained the injury with 9:11 remaining in the second quarter while completing his sixth reception of the night. He struggled to breathe after the catch and later began spitting up blood on the sideline, prompting the medical staff to send him to the hospital for a CT scan and additional tests.
Although Watson initially resisted leaving the game, he understood that the medical staff needed to investigate the injury.
“I couldn’t breathe on the field. I got the wind knocked out of me.” Watson said. “I got back to the sideline, and I was kind of spitting up some blood or something like that. So the doctor said I had to go get a CT.”
The tests revealed a broken rib but no additional complications that prevented him from returning. Watson said he wanted to get back on the field before he even left the hospital.
He returned to Lambeau Field late in the third quarter, still wearing his pads, and sprinted down the tunnel to rejoin the Packers. Television cameras followed his return, creating a moment that reminded Watson of his childhood interest in professional wrestling.
“It was super dramatic.” Watson said. “I used to watch WWE as a kid. I felt like I was watching WWE Smackdown vs. Raw or something, seeing the cameras on me when I was coming out of the ambulance.”
Watson received an enthusiastic welcome from his teammates, who were surprised to see him back so quickly after the hospital trip.
Christian Watson Helps Packers Hold Off Panthers
Watson returned to the game with Green Bay leading 27-10 in the third quarter. Quarterback Jordan Love immediately looked for him on a deep pass, although Watson could not complete the catch.
He later hauled in a six-yard reception on the opening play of the fourth quarter before adding another seven-yard catch.
His final reception proved particularly valuable as Green Bay tried to protect its lead. After Carolina trimmed the deficit to 27-19, Watson converted a third-and-2 situation with a seven-yard catch, helping the Packers maintain possession during the closing minutes.
Love finished with 288 passing yards and three touchdown passes, connecting with Tucker Kraft, Matthew Golden and Josh Jacobs. Jacobs added a rushing touchdown and a receiving score as Green Bay improved to 5-3.
The Panthers threatened late after Bryce Young connected with Jalen Coker for a 26-yard touchdown, but Carolina failed to complete the two-point conversion. The Packers’ defense then stopped the Panthers on downs before helping close out the victory.
Young threw for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception as Carolina fell to 3-4.
Teammates Praise Watson’s Determination
Watson’s return became one of the defining moments of the game, with players and coaches struggling to recall a similar situation involving a teammate who left the stadium for hospital treatment before returning to play.
Running back Josh Jacobs described the experience as a first for him, while Packers head coach Matt LaFleur praised Watson’s performance and determination.
“The grit to go back in the game,” LaFleur said. “He had a heck of a night. I can’t imagine what he would have had, had he not missed so much time.”
Watson had already reached 100 receiving yards before leaving the game. His 53-yard reception also marked his third catch of at least 50 yards this season, giving him the most such receptions in the NFL at that point.
The performance continued a productive season for the receiver, who entered the game with career highs in receptions and receiving yards through Green Bay’s first eight games.
Watson has also battled several injuries during his career, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament. His determination to return reflected the importance of staying available for a Packers team pursuing another successful season.
“This means everything to me, to be out there on the football field,” Watson said.
His return gave Green Bay an emotional boost and another receiving threat in the closing stages, helping the Packers withstand Carolina’s late push and secure the win.
