Max Plante cemented his place among college hockey’s elite after capturing the Hobey Baker Award on Friday night, recognizing him as the nation’s best player for the 2025–26 season.

The Minnesota Duluth sophomore edged out fellow finalists Eric Pohlkamp and T.J. Hughes following a dominant campaign that saw him emerge as one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the country.

Plante finished the season with 25 goals and 52 points, ranking second and third nationally in those categories, respectively, while closing the year on a five-game point streak.

“I obviously had a great year, but a lot of props to my linemates,” Plante said. “They made a bunch of plays for me, and I was the beneficiary of it.”

Detroit Red Wings Prospect Continues Rapid Rise

A second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, Plante’s development has accelerated quickly. His sophomore leap not only validated his draft stock but also positioned him as one of the top prospects in college hockey.

He also became the first Minnesota Duluth player to win the award since 2020 and just the program’s seventh recipient overall, further strengthening the Bulldogs’ reputation as a pipeline for elite talent.

Family Motivation Drives Decision to Return

Despite his rising professional profile, Plante confirmed he will return to Minnesota Duluth for the 2026–27 season. The decision carries personal significance, as he aims to share the ice with both of his brothers.

His older brother, Zam, already plays alongside him, while younger brother Victor will join the program next season.

“That was a huge motivator,” Plante said. “Just the chance to play with two brothers at that level and try to achieve something I haven’t yet — a national championship.”

Awards Night Highlights Across College Hockey

Plante headlined a loaded awards night that also saw Trey Augustine take home top goaltender honors, while the NCAA recognized several emerging stars for standout seasons.

Still, the spotlight firmly belonged to Plante, whose blend of production, consistency, and leadership defined one of the most complete seasons in recent college hockey memory.
