The moment came midway through the third quarter during a brief confrontation with Nets forward Ziaire Williams. With 5:12 remaining, both players were assessed double technical fouls following contact after an offensive foul on Dončić. Officials reviewed the sequence before issuing the calls, a detail that could make a successful appeal unlikely.
Incident Overshadows Dominant Performance
Despite the controversy, Dončić delivered another standout performance, finishing with 41 points and continuing a red-hot stretch that has fueled the Lakers’ recent surge. The team has now gone 11-1 over its last 12 games, with Dončić averaging nearly 40 points per contest during that span.
However, the technical foul threatens to interrupt that rhythm. Under NBA rules, a player receives a one-game suspension upon reaching 16 technical fouls in a season unless one is rescinded. Dončić had previously reached that threshold last week following a verbal exchange with Goga Bitadze of the Orlando Magic, but the league overturned that call after an appeal.
This time, the circumstances appear less favorable. Because referees reviewed the play before issuing the technical, it reduces the likelihood of another reversal.
Dončić Responds to the Call
Speaking after the game, Dončić disputed the severity of his actions, suggesting the situation escalated due to Williams’ behavior. He maintained that he was simply trying to disengage and leave the confrontation.
From his perspective, the contact that led to the technical was minimal, and the reaction from officials felt excessive. Still, the final decision now rests with the league office, with the Lakers expected to explore an appeal regardless.
Head coach JJ Redick admitted he did not have a clear view of the play but expressed confidence that the organization would review the situation thoroughly.
