It was a bit of a rough week for baseball in Utah
Utah 21-18 (9-12)
The Utah Utes followed up their series sweep of Texas Tech last week with a win at home in Salt Lake City. Utah played one of their rivals to the south, the Utah Valley Wolverines. The U would get the win, 16-9. Unfortunately for Utah, that was as good as it was going to get this week.
Things did not go well at all when the Central Florida Knights came to Salt Lake City. UCF ended Utah’s four-game winning streak on Friday, in a 12-2 run-rule win. On Saturday, Utah and UCF had their schedules reshuffled and would play a doubleheader. UCF won the first game, 12-4. Utah would get swept in another run-rule defeat later that day, 10-0. The Utes were outscored 34-6 by the Knights. Utah will battle BYU in the Holy War on the baseball diamond in Provo beginning on Thursday.
Utah Valley 15-28 (1-8 in the WAC)
UVU struggled this week as much as they did last week. They got beat by in-state rival Utah on Tuesday, 16-9. They then headed to Texas to take on Tarleton State, but things didn’t get any better there. Tarleton State took game one on Friday in a 12-2 run-rule victory. Saturday’s game was more of the same, and the Wolverines fell 8-2. It looked like they might break their losing streak on Sunday, as they took a 9-5 lead into the seventh inning. A late-game collapse gave Tarleton State the sweep and extended UVU’s losing streak to nine games. The Wolverines have lost 12 of their last 13 contests. This week, UVU will host Cal Baptist in Orem.
BYU 22-21 (11-10 in the Big 12)
The Cougars traveled to sunny Tucson to take on another team at home in the desert, the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona shut BYU out in the series opener, 6-0. BYU found themselves hurting, having lost four straight when Friday came around.
Third baseman Easton Jones and first baseman Matt Hansen had big games on Friday. Jones and Hansen each had three hits and a run batted in and combined to score three runs. They powered BYU to a 5-1 victory to even the series. The Cougars looked to take the series on Saturday. Jones had two more hits and two more runs batted in, and BYU won the game 8-4. The Cougs scored an important Big 12 series victory.
BYU had one more game in Arizona before returning home for a huge series. They played Grand Canyon today and got hammered, 10-3. This week, BYU will have a huge home series against their rivals, the Utah Utes, in the baseball edition of the Holy War.
Utah Tech 28-16 (6-3 in the WAC)
Tech hit the road to play an important WAC series in California against Cal Baptist. Cal Baptist won the series-opening game on Friday, 7-3. Utah Tech roared back on Saturday, though. The Trailblazers won, 10-1, behind a big game from pitcher Dakota West. Petey Soto Jr. hit a home run for Utah Tech as they evened the series with Cal Baptist.
This set up the all-important rubber match for Sunday. Unfortunately, the tank was empty for the Trailblazers. Utah Tech fell to Cal Baptist, 6-0, and dropped the series, too. Tomorrow, Utah Tech will host UNLV for their final matchup of the season. They’ll then host Tarleton State in St. George.
