The St. Louis Cardinals prospect Thomas Saggese received some well-deserved recognition as he was named the Texas League MVP to go along with his all-star selection. He is the fifth Springfield Cardinal to receive the award. The 21-year-old infielder led the league in AVG .318, OPS .936, RBI’s 107, hits 158, extra base hits 60, and total bases with 274.
Prospect Saggese is Making Montgomery Trade Look Good, so Far
The Cardinals acquired utility infielder Saggese, top pitching prospect Tekoah Roby and left-handed reliever John King in exchange for Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton at the trade deadline. This trade has looked good so far as both prospects and King have performed well. Roby has pitched well in his time at Double-A Springfield, tallying 19 strikeouts to 3 walks in only 12 innings pitched. Also, King has put up a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched at the big league level. Additionally, Saggese has done nothing but hit since his arrival, and he has definitely opened some eyes in the process.
Saggese put up a .331/.403/.662 slash line with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 33 games with Double-A Springfield. Over the entire season in Double-A, split between the Ranger organization and Cardinals, he has put up a respectable .318/.385/.551 slash line with 25 homeruns and 107 RBI’s. The infielder has also shown versatility on defense, logging time at second base, third base, and shortstop for the Double-A squad. He is likely best suited at second base but definitely has the versatility to play all over the infield.
Saggese Hits for the Cycle
The slugging infielder opened some eyes earlier in the season, hitting for the cycle against Wichita. Leading the team to an 11-2 victory. He became just the second Springfield Cardinal to hit for the cycle in the past twelve years.
Saggese has Bright Future Ahead
The Cardinals prospect Saggese is proving to be an excellent addition so far. The young infielder is a fun player to watch. If he continues to develop at his current pace, he has the potential to become a versatile option for the Cardinals. He should be major league ready soon, and there’s always room on a roster for a player that can play multiple positions and hit. The right-handed infielder may not have headlined the trade, but he has the potential to be a contributor at the big league level soon.
