Guard, Bragi Gudmundsson announced that he will be joining the Penn State Nittany Lions. Gudmundsson announced this on his Instagram, and he is one of the 2023 recruits. Penn State may not be the best college basketball team in the United States, but they made it to the March Madness Tournament in 2022. Here is a look at what Bragi Gudmundsson will bring to Penn State’s basketball team.

Bragi Gudmundsson High School

Gudmundsson is actually from Iceland and will be heading to the United States to join the Nittany Lions. The incoming freshman has shown his skills in shooting. A video of Gudmundsson in a match can be watched here. Gudmundsson is listed as six foot five and 19 years old. The bonus of taking a player from Iceland is that he will be 20 as a freshman. This is already a strong age for a player, but he will have multiple years of eligibility as a freshman.

Gudmundsson played highschool basketball for Grindavik. In addition to being a good height, in the regular season of high school, he averaged 10.4 points 4.1 rebounds, and two assists, according to Pro Ballers. While he may not be scoring as high as Penn State fans would want, Gudmundsson is a solid player.

Impact on Penn State

Penn State’s basketball team did well in 2022. Their recruiting class has continuously gotten better. Making it into the March Madness tournament in 2022 was a big deal, and helps with their recruitment. With them making the tournament last season, the Nittany Lions can do it again in 2023 and will be expected to.

Gudmundsson will be joining a team that previously held a 10-10 conference record. This means they will be pushing to achieve the winning record in 2023. Penn State can do it if they remain healthy and disciplined. The odds are the Guard will not play his freshman year, but still adds to the depth of the team.

Penn State and Rutgers both ended the season 10-10, but the Nittany Lions had a better overall record of 23-14. This season, they will look to improve that conference record and hope to have a higher seeding in the Big Ten Tournament. In addition to Gudmundsson, Penn State still has two scholarship positions open for 2023. The next step is to wait for those two spots to be filled.

Bragi Gudmundsson is just the latest addition to the Nittany Lions in 2023. For information on another player who has joined the team, read here.
