Billy Donovan has stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, choosing to exit rather than remain through a major organizational reset.

The decision follows extensive discussions with ownership, with Donovan ultimately opting to allow a new leadership structure full control over the franchise’s direction. Despite the departure, team officials made it clear they wanted him to stay.

Front Office Overhaul Drives Decision

Chicago’s recent shake-up played a central role in Donovan’s exit. The franchise parted ways with key executives, including Artūras Karnišovas and Marc Eversley, after a six-year run that produced just one playoff appearance.

Owner Jerry Reinsdorf emphasized that performance did not drive Donovan’s departure and that long-term planning did.

“We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach,” Reinsdorf said. “But giving a new head of basketball operations the ability to shape the organization was the priority.”

Donovan, who held a contract option for next season, chose to step aside rather than potentially limit the incoming executive’s flexibility.

Mixed Results Despite Strong Resume

Donovan’s tenure in Chicago ended with a 226–256 record and four straight seasons without a playoff berth. The Bulls’ lone postseason appearance came in 2021–22, when they were eliminated in the first round.

Still, Donovan’s broader résumé remains strong. Before Chicago, he led the Oklahoma City Thunder to five consecutive playoff appearances and built a reputation as a steady, player-focused leader. He also enters the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class.

What Comes Next for Bulls and Donovan

The Bulls have already begun searching for a new head of basketball operations, with several league executives under consideration. That hire will likely dictate the next head coach, signaling a full reset for the franchise.

As for Donovan, he isn’t done coaching. The 60-year-old will draw interest across both the NBA and college ranks, making him one of the most prominent names on the market.

For Chicago, the decision marks a clean break. For Donovan, it’s a strategic exit that keeps his reputation intact—and opens the door for the next chapter of his career.
