Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is considered week-to-week with a right hamstring injury and will likely miss some time, head coach Ben Johnson said Monday.
Williams suffered the injury during Sunday’s 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He was forced to leave the game after going down in pain following a non-contact play and was later ruled out.
Johnson provided the update during an appearance on ESPN 1000 Chicago, saying the Bears still needed to evaluate Williams further after his MRI.
“It sounds like it’s going to be a week-to-week deal for him,” Johnson said. “But it sounds like it’s week to week but will likely miss some time.”
Williams Avoids Major Injury
Williams underwent an MRI Monday morning to determine the severity of the hamstring injury. The initial prognosis was considered favorable, with the Bears not ruling out the possibility of the quarterback returning in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
However, Johnson indicated that Williams is expected to miss at least some time as the Bears continue to monitor his recovery.
Johnson was also asked whether the team had avoided a more serious injury following Williams’ early reaction to the injury.
“Yeah, potentially,” Johnson said. “Potentially. You know, we’ll see.”
Williams’ status for the Bears’ Week 3 matchup should become clearer as the team evaluates him throughout the week. Chicago is scheduled to face Philadelphia on Monday Night Football, giving Williams an additional day before the game.
Tyson Bagent Could Start Against Eagles
With Williams considered week-to-week, Tyson Bagent could take over as the Bears’ starter if the quarterback cannot return in time.
Bagent finished Sunday’s loss after Williams left the game, giving him experience in the offense heading into the upcoming week. The Bears will continue to monitor Williams before making a decision on his availability.
Johnson is scheduled to speak with local reporters Monday afternoon, when he could provide another update on Williams’ condition.
