The Los Angeles Lakers have added another defensive specialist to their offseason makeover, agreeing to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with free agent Matisse Thybulle, according to ESPN. The move gives head coach JJ Redick another proven perimeter defender while adding experience to a roster built around Luka Dončić.
Thybulle reportedly chose the Lakers after conversations with Redick and Dončić about his expected role, believing Los Angeles offered the best opportunity to contribute on a contender.
Thybulle Brings Elite Defensive Credentials
A two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, Thybulle has built his reputation as one of the league’s premier perimeter stoppers.
Despite appearing in just 45 games over the past two seasons, the 28-year-old remained highly effective. He shot 41.8% from three-point range during that span and led the NBA in both steals and deflections per 36 minutes last season among players who appeared in at least 20 games.
His improved outside shooting, combined with his defensive versatility, gives the Lakers another reliable wing capable of guarding multiple positions without demanding a high offensive workload.
Lakers Face Roster Decision
Thybulle’s signing increases the Lakers’ roster to 16 players on guaranteed contracts, one above the regular-season limit.
The franchise now has until opening night to reduce the roster to the NBA’s 15-player maximum, either through a trade or by waiving a player.
Los Angeles also explored sign-and-trade scenarios with the Portland Trail Blazers that would have allowed Thybulle to receive a larger contract, but the two teams were unable to reach an agreement before he signed outright.
Busy Offseason Continues
Thybulle’s arrival is the latest move in an aggressive Lakers offseason aimed at improving the team’s depth and defensive identity.
He reportedly considered returning to Portland, but sources indicated the Trail Blazers primarily offered non-guaranteed contracts and did not make a strong push to retain him.
The Lakers have also maintained interest in unrestricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, although discussions have reportedly stalled as both sides have yet to find common ground on a potential deal.
With Thybulle now in the fold, Los Angeles adds another proven defender while continuing to evaluate additional roster moves before the start of the 2026-27 season.
