This past weekend was one that New York sports fans would like to forget.
As the calendar transitions from August to September, vibes in the sports world are usually at a high point. The dog days of summer are over as the race towards the MLB playoffs heats up, and the first kickoff of the NFL season occurs. This past weekend, though lacking that typical September cool breeze and instead opting for torrential downpours and intense heat, New York sports failed miserably.
The Yankees, continuing their wretched ways of 2023, lost the series to the Milwaukee Brewers. On Saturday, the Yanks celebrated a historic occasion, Old Timer’s Day, which involved honoring the 25th anniversary of the all-time great 1998 team, which won a combined 125 games.
Heavy rain and thunder would then settle in after the event, flooding the outfield and stadium concourses, and pushing the game back two hours. The Yankees would then go on to get blown out in that game, 9-2, after losing the previous night by a score of 8-2. The next day was not much better, as the Yankees would end up getting no-hit through 10 (yes, ten) innings. They did manage to win the game in 13 though, thanks to a walk-off by Kyle Higashioka, his first.
The Martian is Sidelined
Despite winning the game, they still lost another series and now sit at a 71-72 record. Even worse: their top prospect Jasson Dominguez, who came up last week and was raking, tore his UCL. He will now require surgery and miss at least 6-10 months, sidelining him for at least half of next season and pausing his so-far otherworldly career.
Looking across the city into Queens—actually to Minnesota, where the Mets were playing—that team did not fare much better. The Mets lost two out of three to the Twins, marking a miserable weekend for New York baseball fans alike. Most were looking towards Sunday night, the opening day for the New York Giants, looking to turn the page on baseball and flip to football.
A Giant Flop
That did not age well either. The Giants would look promising in their opening drive against the Dallas Cowboys, but after a pick-six allowing Dallas to flip the tables and score a touchdown immediately, it was nothing but downhill. The Cowboys would go on to rout the Giants 40-0, leaving over 70,000 Giants fans in disbelief as it rained, both literally and figuratively, upon them.
The Jets seem to be New Yorkers’ last hope, as they and Aaron Rodgers take on the Bills tonight (update: that did not go well, as Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury on the first drive of the game. It really isn’t going well for New York sports in 2023. Yikes.)
And to make things worse, the Brooklyn Cyclones lost their final game of the season, eliminating them from playoff contention. Okay, that may not be the most disappointing sports news of the weekend, but it’s something I was there for and experienced. Either way, the vibes of New York sports fans may not have reached lows this low in quite some time.
