The New York Yankees have called up two of their top prospects for tonight’s game against the Washington Nationals.
Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira are the two new faces added to the roster today. Peraza, an infielder who primarily has played third base this season in the minors, has been up in the bigs before. He actually made his debut towards the end of last season and was a contributing factor in the playoffs. However, he has spent most of this season in the minors (he did come up briefly earlier this season).
Everson Pereira, however, is a brand-new face. He is a top outfield prospect who has primarily played left field and center field this minor league season. Pereira has been blazing in the minors, hitting .300 with 18 home runs and a .921 OPS. Now, he will get a chance to carry that flair into the big leagues as he starts in left field at Yankee Stadium.
While Peraza didn’t exactly shine in his major league games earlier this season, where he hit only .173, his minor league season tells a different story. As of late, he has hit .268 at AAA with 14 home runs and a .836 OPS.
To make room on the roster for the kids, the Yankees transferred Billy McKinney to the Injured List. They have also designated pinch runner Greg Allen for assignment. Finally, they reinstated pitcher Carlos Rodón from the Injured List, and he will start tonight against the Nationals.
Bringing up the kids will add a much-needed spark for the Yankees, who currently sit in last place after being swept by their rival Red Sox. They are currently in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, their longest since 1995. If things don’t change, they will be on pace to finish the season under .500 for the first time since 1992.
Barring any setbacks, the pair of prospects will play tonight against the Nationals.
