Dominican prosecutors made accusations on Wednesday against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, alleging commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering in connection with a purported relationship with a minor. The minor’s mother is also facing similar charges in the case.
Legal Measures Sought
Prosecutors urged the judge to impose an $86,000 bond on Franco, restrict his departure from the Dominican Republic, and place him under house arrest. The money laundering charges revolve around allegations of Franco making payments to the minor’s mother. Similar restrictive measures were sought for the minor’s mother.
“These measures requested by the Public Ministry seek to guarantee the integrity of the process.” The ministry said in a statement.
Prosecutors also delivered evidence to the judge who is expected to soon rule on Franco’s future.
Judge’s Decision Day
The judge will analyze documents and evidence collected during the months-long investigation and issue a ruling Friday in a courtroom in Puerto Plata, where the alleged incidents occurred. The judge’s options include releasing Franco on bond, temporary arrest, preventing him from leaving the Dominican Republic, or requiring periodic appearances until the investigation or trial concludes.
Franco’s Current Detention
The 22-year-old All-Star player remains in jail after being detained on Monday in Puerto Plata. His attorney, Teodosio Jáquez Encarnación, has refrained from commenting to the media, stating only that Franco is “doing fine.” Prosecutors have also chosen not to comment.
Investigation Background
Authorities have not disclosed case details, though an investigation began on Aug. 14 based on social media postings implying Franco’s involvement with a minor. The authenticity of these reported posts remains unverified.
On Dec. 26, police and prosecutors visited two of Franco’s properties in Baní, his hometown just southwest of Santo Domingo’s capital, without finding the player. Last Thursday, a prosecutor requested Franco’s appearance, fulfilled only on Monday, leading to his detention after a nearly three-hour interview.
MLB’s Involvement and Actions
Major League Baseball (MLB) placed Franco on administrative leave in August under its joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse with the Players’ Association. Franco has received payment and service time during his leave. The MLB’s investigation timeline and potential disciplinary actions remain uncertain.
