The Minnesota Vikings have added another layer to their evolving quarterback situation, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran Carson Wentz.

Wentz returns after spending the 2025 season with Minnesota, joining a reshaped quarterback room that now includes newcomer Kyler Murray, former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, and young option Max Brosmer.

Competition Intensifies for Starting Role

Head coach Kevin O’Connell has not named a starting quarterback, though Murray is widely viewed as the frontrunner. Still, Minnesota has kept the competition open, with McCarthy continuing to push for the role after an injury-disrupted start to his career.

Wentz’s return adds further intrigue. While the team expects him to serve in a backup capacity, his experience and familiarity with the system give him a legitimate shot at competing for snaps, whether as a No. 2 option or more if injuries arise.

Wentz Provides Proven, If Inconsistent, Production

The 33-year-old started five games for Minnesota last season, posting a 2-3 record while throwing for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. He played through a shoulder injury for much of that stretch before undergoing season-ending surgery.

Despite the setbacks, Wentz helped produce some of the Vikings’ most productive offensive outings of the season, offering stability during a turbulent year at quarterback.

Depth a Priority After Injury-Plagued Seasons

Minnesota’s aggressive approach to the position reflects recent struggles. Injuries and inconsistent play derailed potential playoff runs in both 2023 and 2025, forcing the team to rely on inexperienced options like Brosmer, who endured a difficult rookie campaign.

By adding both Murray and Wentz while retaining McCarthy, the Vikings have built one of the league’s deepest quarterback rooms—prioritizing competition, insurance, and flexibility heading into a pivotal 2026 season.
