The floodgates have been opened. At noon Eastern on Monday, the NFL tampering period began. Teams are now allowed to communicate directly with free agents in pursuit of new contracts. While official deals can’t be signed until Wednesday, most of the action will have happened before then. While some of the moves from day one of NFL free agency have grabbed national attention, a few underrated moves have gone relatively unnoticed.

Underrated Moves From Day One of NFL Free Agency

Josh Sweat to the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals were in desperate need of pass-rushing help entering this offseason. Zaven Collins led the team in sacks with just five in 2024. The Cardinals were aggressive in fixing this issue, agreeing to a deal with former Philadelphia Eagle Josh Sweat. According to Adam Schefter, Sweat and the Cardinals agreed on a four-year deal worth $76.4 million.

Josh Sweat was part of a rotation of pass rushers in Philadelphia, but he made his presence known. In Super Bowl LIX, Sweat terrorized Patrick Mahomes, sacking him three times. At just 27 years old, Sweat could be the Cardinals primary threat off the edge for years to come.

Justin Fields to the New York Jets

After moving on from Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets have agreed to sign quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year deal. According to Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $40 million, with $30 million guaranteed. Fields, a former Chicago Bears first-round pick, has struggled to find his footing in the NFL. After a brief stint with the Steelers, he lands in New York as their presumed starter.

The Jets are not expected to be highly competitive in 2025. Under new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, Justin Fields will have space to learn the offense and grow into his role. Fields will connect with former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson in New York.

Grady Jarrett to the Chicago Bears

The Atlanta Falcons cut defensive tackle Grady Jarrett after the 2024 season. In his ten seasons with the Falcons, Jarrett totaled 45 sacks and 386 tackles. After less than a week without a team, Jarrett signed with the Chicago Bears. According to Adam Schefter, the three-year deal is worth $43.5 million.

At this point in his career, Grady Jarrett will not have to play every snap for the Chicago Bears. He will stay fresh as part of a rotation. With his experience, Jarrett will be a quality addition, both on the field and in the locker room.
