UFL Week 2:

Stallions vs Panthers Week 2 - pfnewsroom.com

Week 2 of the UFL season kicked off with a Friday Night Lights game. The Birmingham Stallions (0-1) took on the Michigan Panthers (1-0) at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

The first recorded attendance at Ford Field drew a solid crowd of 10,049 fans, marking only the second Friday Night game in UFL history.

UFL Week 2: 1st Quarter

The Stallions struck first as kicker Harrison “The Thiccer Kicker” Mevis drilled a 36-yard field goal with 11:34 left in the first quarter, putting Birmingham on the board 3-0 at the end of one-quarter of play.

UFL Week 2: 2nd Quarter

With 0:32 left in the first half, “The Thiccer Kicker” increased the lead on a 21-yard field goal, completing an 11-play, 44-yard drive, and the Stallions led at the half 6-0.

UFL: Week 2: 3rd Quarter

With 11:27 left in the quarter, Birmingham’s A.J. Thomas picked off a Michigan pass and lateraled the ball to Perrion Winfrey.

On the next play, Ricky Person Jr. scored his first rushing touchdown this season.

The one-yard run set up a two-point conversion, but it failed. The Stallions led at the end of three quarters 12-0.

UFL: Week 2: 4th Quarter

With 14:52 to play, Stallions quarterback Matt Corral threw a TD pass to wide receiver Deon Cain for 52 yards. Nevertheless, the two-point try was no good, but the Stallions increased their lead to 18-0.

With 9:16 left, the Panthers scored on a nine-yard touchdown catch that broke Birmingham’s shutout. The three-point try was good, cutting the deficit to 18-9.

Mevis’ third field goal of the game from 31 yards put the Stallions up 21-9 with 1:53 to play.

The Panthers put up one more final drive that ended with a 39-yard field goal to make it a 21-12 Stallions lead.

Michigan opted to go for the fourth and 12 play to retain the ball, but the attempt failed. As a result, the Stallions improved to (1-1) with a 21-12 win.

Stats

It was an exciting way to kick off Week 2 of the UFL, and the second season has not disappointed.

Nevertheless, the best thing they added was the Friday Night Lights game to get each week started.

It brings back memories of my high school days when we played Friday Night football under the lights on the turf field.

Even after starting quarterback Alex McGough went down on the first play of the game, backup quarterback Matt Corral still led that opening scoring drive to put the Stallions up 3-0.

He did a fabulous job running the offense.

  • Matt Corral was 18-29 for 198 yards, with one TD and two INTs
  • Ricky Parson Jr. finished strong with 17 carries for 53 yards and a TD
  • Deon Cain led the receiving core with four catches for 84 yards and a TD

And the defense did not disappoint either:

  • A.J. Thomas had six total tackles with two pass breakups and his 1st INT of the season

The star of the game was “The Thiccer Kicker,” who scored three field goals while picking up the offensive slack.

Michigan’s defense played well enough to stay in the game. The offense, however, didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter and was too much for Birmingham’s defense.

  • Nate McCrary finished with 14 carries for 53 yards and 0 TDs
  • Siaosi Mariner led the receivers with four catches for 44 yards and 0 TDs

Overall, the first two Friday Night games in the UFL should indicate that these games and the rest of the weekend games will make season two better than season one.
