It’s almost that time of year again when the top college football quarterbacks in the SEC put their preseason rankings into action.
This season will continue to build on new rules added.
It will be the first time an expanded 12-team CFP will be introduced.
As college football continues to be forward-thinking, the players are focused on winning the National Championship in January.
Let’s take a look at the top six quarterbacks in the 2024 SEC Quarterback Rankings.
2024 SEC Quarterback Rankings
1. Carson Beck – Georgia
It’s without a surprise we have a potential 2024 CFP National Champion in Beck leading this list.
The Georgia Bulldogs recruited Beck as a four-star prospect. He played behind the current LA Rams quarterback, Stenson Bennett, for three years.
True, the 6’4″, 233 lb. signal-caller could have transferred out for more playing time, but he decided to stay until his name was finally called.
It turns out it was the right decision.
Beck is a tall, bulky quarterback with all the tools to be great this season.
He goes through his progressions probably better than any of the other SEC quarterbacks on this list.
Additionally, number 15 on Georgia is an accurate passer, and his arm strength allows him to throw the ball with power and touch precisely.
Beck is compared to the legend Eli Manning of the New York Giants.
In fact, one previous mock draft has the Georgia product being drafted number five overall to the Giants in 2025.
Could history repeat itself in the future?
2. Jalen Milroe – Alabama
It feels like Tide fans have seen and heard it before. They have a 6’2″, 220 lb. dual-threat quarterback who can hit the deep pass.
He averaged 10 yards per attempt, ranking him third nationally against all quarterbacks.
Milroe is an excellent runner in the RPO game and has improved with each snap.
The prominent signal-caller also is a Heisman candidate who has a chance to go pro in 2025. Could Milroe be Jalen Hurts 2.0?
If so, I’d think he would take that as a compliment.
However, unlike Hurts, Milroe has yet to win a National Championship, much like Bryce Young.
3. Jaxson Dart – Ole Miss
The USC transfer has lived up to his last name, “Dart.”
At 6’2″, 220 lbs., the senior throws bullet passes like no other Ole Miss quarterback since Chad Kelly.
The signal-caller finished second with 63 completions of 20+ yards, which ranked him third in total offense (288.7) among SEC quarterbacks.
He is also a daredevil in the RPO game, as he runs hard and likes to put his body on the line.
Dart improved tremendously last year, and expectations will only increase in 2024.
Could Dart win a Heisman in Oxford this year? The solid athlete is undoubtedly a dark horse candidate.
4. Quinn Ewers – Texas
Make no mistake, Ewers is a very talented quarterback who might be a better pro quarterback than Dart.
The 6’2″, 210 lb. Dr. Pepper’s NIL-sponsored athlete will see his first taste of SEC competition after throwing for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns while running the ball for 8.8 yards per carry.
What differentiates Ewers from Dart is the question of NFL readiness compared to top-ranked SEC quarterbacks. Dart is a good SEC quarterback, while Ewers may be a better pro than Dart.
Ewers also finished second in the Big 12 in passing yards, and even though Texas beat Bama, that doesn’t prove he will be ready for a full year of SEC play.
Texas does have a better SEC quarterback waiting in the folds in redshirt freshman Arch Manning, who is 6’4″ and 225 lbs.
5. Conner Weigman – Texas A&M
Weigman is a wild card to be a top 6 quarterback in the SEC this year. The field general in him shows that he goes through his progressions well and is spot-on with his ball placement and touch passes.
If only he were more of a threat in the RPO game, Weigman could be higher on this list.
There’s nothing wrong with being a field general, and the 6’2″, 215 lb. passer will stick to that if it works for him in 2024.
Additionally, Weigman would have been an All-SEC quarterback in 2023 had his season not been cut short by an injury against the Auburn Tigers.
New offensive coordinator and former dual-threat quarterback Colin Klein will help him use his mobility more while continuing to build on his natural throwing mechanics.
The redshirt sophomore may be a year or two away, but he could develop into an NFL draft prospect within time.
6. Taylen Green – Arkansas
Green could break out in 2024 with the Hogs after transferring in from Boise State.
The 6’6″, 220 lb. dual-threat lit up defenses in the Mountain West with his arm, legs, and more importantly, his mind.
While his tape was impressive at Boise State, his game translates well to the SEC, and he fits Bobby Petrino’s power spread attack.
Green is the type of game-changing dual-threat quarterback the Razorbacks have been looking for since K.J. Jefferson transferred to UCF.
