It’s usually difficult to say who’s the best prospect in what position going into the NFL Draft but this year, it’s too clear that Abdul Carter is unrivaled in the pass-rushing department. Scouting agents, media outlets, and analysts alike agree that he is not only the top edge rusher but also one of the premier overall talents in this year’s class. His rare combination of burst, bend, and power makes him a nightmare for offensive tackles.
In this article, we’ll explore Carter’s strengths, weaknesses, and why everyone thinks he will quickly become an important player in the NFL.
Background
Born in 2004 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Carter attended La Salle College High School in nearby Wyndmoor. His explosiveness was on display in his senior year, as he racked up 78 tackles with 10 tackles for loss. A four-star recruit, Carter had several offers but chose to commit to Penn State.
Collegiate Accolades
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound standout earned widespread recognition in college, collecting numerous accolades and finishing atop several key statistical categories. Serving as a key reserve in his freshman season, he led the team with 6.5 sacks, while accumulating 56 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and four passes broken up. He was a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award and was named to the Second-team All-Big Ten Conference.
Moving from linebacker to defensive end in 2024, Carter still performed excellently. He topped the FBS in tackles for loss and finished seventh in sacks, recording an impressive 12 on the season. Carter was named First-team All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and crowned it all with Unanimous All-American honors.
Scouting Report Summary
Carter’s daunting speed and non-stop motor make him a major threat off the edge. He’s got the athleticism and instincts to get the jump on offensive tackles routinely. Once he’s off the line, his speed and technique allow him to string together moves and maintain pressure on the quarterback. His unmatched intensity forces offensive tackles to throw technique out the window just to keep pace.
Carter’s weight and play strength though, could be a problem in front of stronger players who can mirror his speed. He could also struggle against base blocks and double teams. That’s one area he would need to work on. But, his quickness and athleticism are his bread and butter and NFL teams will likely use him in different ways, giving him the space he needs to avoid those tough matchups. Whatever the setup though, a little more time in the weight room could transform the 21-year-old into a high-impact rusher with Pro Bowl potential.
Strengths
Quickness: Carter’s quickness offers a real threat to offensive tackles right off the snap. He can explode out of his stance to gain the edge quickly. This burst, paired with his natural athleticism makes him a constant disruptor.
Great waist bend: Carter has an impressive ability to dip and bend around the corner with such fluidity. His flexibility allows him to get low to the ground without compromising speed, forcing tackles to work overtime trying to keep up.
Weaknesses
Experience at edge rusher: Carter only recently transitioned from off-ball linebacker to a true edge rusher. While this transition has allowed him to utilize his mobility, his block awareness could use some improvement.
Physicality: Carter still has some work to do to strengthen his base as he can get overpowered by stronger tackles.
Pass rush technique and hand usage: Carter needs to develop a more structured and consistent pass rush plan. He also needs to refine his ability to use his hands to shed blockers more effectively.
NFL Combine Results
Carter was unable to participate in any workout or drills at the NFL Combine due to a shoulder injury. Medical tests have also revealed a stress fracture in his foot but none of that is expected to affect his draft stock.
