Tiger Woods and his indoor golf league know how to attract attention. Already the new indoor gold league that he and Rory McIlroy are launching in 2024 has Josh Allen, Steph Curry, Justin Timberlake, and DJ Khaled as investors and it seems another one has joined the ranks. New York Mets owner Steven Cohen has bought a team for the new indoor golf league.

Steven Cohen Buys Team For Tiger Woods Indoor Golf League

Cohen becomes the fourth owner of a TGL team. Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are among other people who have already invested in owning teams. Cohen released this statement with the announcement.

“We’re excited to partner with TMRW Sports and represent New York as a founding TGL team. As golf continues to grow in popularity, there’s a demand for enhanced access to the sport and the world’s top players. TGL’s primetime schedule will offer an up-close, fast-paced, and innovative take on the sport that will appeal to traditional golf and new fans alike. We’re excited to be a part of TGL and build a team that makes New York proud.”

It makes sense that Cohen would buy up the New York team as he already has ties to the city and is hoping that the league can become the next big thing in golf.

Too Big To Fail

The concept is really cool. If you want to know the format of the league check out my previous article. The tech-infused nature of it is something we have never seen and looks awesome. This also has the makings of a project that is too big to fail. Some of the most popular golf events are team events. The Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup are awesome events to consume. The hope is that this league feels like that. Teams and players will have rivalries that will develop throughout the season. It is the kind of drama that sports fans love. The amount of big name people across all types of businesses is mind-boggling. The biggest question is this. How does the Tiger Woods indoor golf league avoid the fate of the LIV Tour?

Different Circumstances

First and foremost, LIV did not have the backing of Tiger Woods. Whether you like it or not, if something is golf is going to happen, Woods has to be involved. Pair that with Rory McIlroy, another huge name in golf and the sport is on board. Second, this is going to look completely different from any type of golf we have seen. LIV was another tour played at outdoor courses over a weekend. This league will happen on Monday nights in prime time. There is a much better chance that people will watch on a Monday night rather than on a weekend when so many things pull on their time. Finally, this league doesn’t have the Saudi Arabia funding issue that LIV had.

Personally, I’m all in on the Tiger Woods indoor golf league. It seems like a really fun and cool idea that I am excited to watch. The matches are set to kick off in January of 2024, right after the NFL Monday Night Football season ends. If you are a golf fan, it will definitely be something to check out.
