The TGL indoor golf league, backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, is slated to kick off in January 2024. Teams are starting to be announced and rosters are starting to be filled. While some lesser-known players have signed onto teams, the league got a huge commitment from a PGA Tour star on Tuesday. Justin Thomas has been signed by the Atlanta Drive GC for the upcoming season.
TGL Indoor Golf League Lands Justin Thomas
Thomas is the biggest star to sign on with the league so far. The 30-year-old has won two Majors, a FedEx Cup Championship, The PLAYERS Championship, and a PGA TOUR Player of the Year Award. What is more important for this league is the 15-6-3 record he has in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. Match play will be featured in the league so his prowess there should help the team. Thomas had this to say about joining the Atlanta Drive GC.
“Atlanta and the state of Georgia have been the home to some of the biggest sporting events in the country and I’m excited to represent fans there as part of TGL and Atlanta Drive GC. To be aligned with an owner like Arthur Blank and his incredible variety of businesses as they expand their golf portfolio, feels like a great fit for me. I promise our team will compete hard to win championships and have a lot of fun along the way. We will represent Atlanta in the best way possible while helping grow the game everywhere through this unique TGL format.”
A Huge Get For The TGL Indoor Golf League
Everything is set up for the TGL indoor golf league to be successful. It has the backing of two of the most popular golfers in the world. It is set to debut on Monday nights right after Monday Night Football ends. Sports fans will be craving something to fill their Monday night void. The league is hoping this will be the sport of choice. What they lacked was a big name who was playing. Thomas is one of the most well-known golfers in the world and brings an aura of legitimacy to the team. Hopefully, he is just the first of many household names.
Other Players To Be Announced Soon
On the official website, the Atlanta Drive GC talked about three other PGA Tour players being signed soon to fill out the roster. It is unclear who those players are but the rosters are starting to take shape. This is exactly what golf needs. After the LIV Tour fell flat, golf needed something different to try and bring in fans of the next generation. This has the potential to be just that. With the popularity of indoor golf simulators and places like Top Golf, a league like this could be copied in local markets. January 2024 is right around the corner. Will this be a huge hit for golf or another cool news story that ultimately falls flat?
