We have reached the most glorious day of the sports calendar: Super Bowl Sunday.
Super Bowl LVIII (that’s 58) is set to kick off today at 6:30 PM EST, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Kansas City Chiefs are taking on the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch from Super Bowl LIV in 2020. That Super Bowl saw Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs defeat Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers by a score of 31-20.
Seeking a Dynasty
The Chiefs took home their first championship in 50 years at that point, and have since tacked on another one. Now, they look to add a third ring in five seasons, once again at the hands of San Francisco. If they achieve victory again, they will have officially repeated as Super Bowl champions, a feat that hasn’t occurred since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots.
The term dynasty must be considered when referring to the current era of the Chiefs, if they win tonight. Meanwhile, the 49ers will seek to win their first Super Bowl in almost 30 years, when they won it all in 1995. If San Francisco wins, they will be tied with the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins of all time, at six.
Current Odds
The Forkball has you covered for all Super Bowl-related news, odds, and coverage. These two squads are the winningest teams in the NFL over the last three seasons. All of the major sportsbooks have the 49ers favored slightly over the Chiefs. FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars have San Francisco favored by -1.5, while BetMGM has them favored by +2.
Despite what the sportsbooks say, The Forkball is picking the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LVIII. Patrick Mahomes has proven himself on the big stage multiple times, and is simply the better quarterback than Brock Purdy.
This isn’t a diss on Purdy, however, as he is more skilled than most NFL quarterbacks. But when it’s against Patrick Mahomes, you’re already backed into a corner.
Narratives to Push
The lights are also shining bright on Kansas City. The NFL has a narrative to push with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and we predict the script has already been written. The game will be close, but the Chiefs will take it by a score of 28-24, and Kelce will propose to Swift on the field when it’s all said and done.
Regardless of the outcome, the country will be watching. When it’s all said and done, the clock will then reset and the wait until next NFL season will have officially begun.
