The CFP Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl will be postponed until Thursday after a pickup truck drove into a crowd at 3:15 AM on New Year’s Day in New Orleans killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more. The attacker then got out of his car and started shooting at police officers on the scene. He was wearing body armor and was slain in the volley of gunfire. The FBI have been investigating it as a terrorist attack.

The game was to be played between the #2 Georgia Bulldogs and the #3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Caesars Superdome. They were slated to kick off at 8:45 PM EST. That has now been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 2, at a time TBA.

An official statement released by Chief Executive Officer Jeff Hundley read, “The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”

In terms of the matchup, Georgia had the toughest schedule in college football according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. They beat the highly ranked Texas Longhorns twice, giving them their only losses on the season.

This won’t be the first Sugar Bowl matchup between the two teams, though the previous one was for more marbles. The first one happened in the 1981 Sugar Bowl for the national championship. Georgia won that game.

The Hype Train

Notre Dame came into the season with as much hype as anyone with a documentary on Peacock called Here Come the Irish, which is a six-part episode, released preceding the 2024 season. They suffered just one loss early in the season. After week 2 they were 1-1 and had just been beaten by the Northern Illinois Huskies. Then they went on a monstrous 10 game winning streak. And now they’re here. The hype train may have been on the right track after all.

As of now there is no further information about gametime.
