TD Stallions

On a lovely Sunday the 31st of May, the Birmingham Stallions pounded the Memphis Showboats 46-9 in a revenge matchup. The game started with the teams exchanging a couple of quick scores to lead to a 13-9 Stallions lead. A quick score before halftime led to a 20-9 Birmingham lead. In the second half the Stallions defense, led by an inspired performance by linebacker Tae Crowder, shut down the Showboats. Worse for the Showboats, the Stallions offense was unstoppable.

Five Takeaways:

  1. The Stallions are a well-oiled offensive machine. They were confirmed for the UFL playoff, but Smith and Company relentlessly outmatched the Showboats defense. Jmar Smith, and then backup QB Peasley combined for 22-31 for 220 yards. They combined to hit 10 different receivers.
  2. The Showboats sorely miss Jonathan Adams and Dee Anderson. Memphis has not been a high-powered offense, but the mid-season injury to Adams and the late-season trade of Dee Anderson made Kai Locksley a Key Contributor, but depth was lacking. With the loss of two top receivers and a top running back, the Showboats have been lackluster lately. The Stallions defense shut down any deep threats, especially in The second half.
  3. The Stallions clearly remember the Showboats broke their two-year home win streaks. Even though the Stallions rebounded, that energy was evident in the Sunday game. The Stallions kept pounding the ball and running up the score though it didn’t affect their play off seeding. Even with the starting QB out they still managed yardage.
  4. When your season is over, sometimes you let go the rope. All of the nine previous games, the Showboats were within a score at the fourth quarter. This passed that point mid way in the third. There was not a lack of effort, but the fire a team has in a close game is not present in a blow-out.
  5. Tae Crowder is the Truth. Two pick-sixes in the same game, and not on short runbacks. The first was like a tip drill, but the second one he undercut the receiver and then took it to the house.

Final thought,  this is my final Showboat game article. The Liberty Bow! is under repair, but already there are upgrades. That includes the brand spanking new press boxes. Lastly,  every security person, elevator operator, and assistant coach and especially head coach Jim Turner has made writing about the Showboats an honor and a pleasure.
