San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle will miss the remainder of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas due to a right wrist sprain, the team announced. Castle sustained the injury late in the fourth quarter on Saturday during a win over the Portland Trail Blazers after taking a hard fall on the court. Despite the injury, he was able to get up on his own and continued to play after giving a thumbs up to the team bench.
Team’s Approach
Spurs does not consider the injury serious, but they have decided to take a cautious approach by sitting Stephon Castle out for the rest of the Summer League. They expect Castle to be ready for the start of training camp in the fall.
Summer League Performance
Castle recorded 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, and one steal in the game where he sustained an injury. He went 8-of-21 from the field, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range, in 29 minutes of action. Prior to this game, he made two appearances with the Spurs in the California Classic, averaging 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and 1.5 steals. Castle finished in double figures in all three games he played between Sacramento and Las Vegas.
College Achievements
Stephon Castle was the fourth pick and has had a productive summer stint with the Spurs. They named him the Big East Freshman of the Year after he averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists on 47.2% shooting from the field at UConn. He is the sixth player in UConn history to win this award and the first since Daniel Hamilton in the 2014-15 season.
“It sucks to sit out, but I was happy to see my teammates play well,” Castle said after sitting out Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Hawks. “I feel like they have my best interests in mind,” Castle said of being shut down. “I feel like it’s smart to take the caution route.”
