Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson exited Sunday’s 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks after sustaining a rib injury in the third quarter. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel described the injury as “painful” and said the team will evaluate Thompson further on Monday.

Starting in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa, Thompson hurt himself on the Dolphins’ second drive of the third quarter after taking a hard hit. He stayed on the ground for several minutes but eventually walked off the field under his own power and went to the locker room.

McDaniel on Thompson’s Injury

Tim Boyle, the Dolphins’ third-string quarterback, replaced Thompson. The team signed Boyle to the practice squad before Week 1 and promoted him to the active roster after placing Tagovailoa on injured reserve.

McDaniel said that Thompson wanted to stay in the game but couldn’t due to the severity of the rib injury.

“I haven’t talked to Skylar as of the end of the game,” McDaniel said after Sunday’s game. “It was a rib injury that was pretty painful. And half the pain or half of the frustration for him, I think, was he was trying to find a way to not come out of the game. And ultimately it was pretty painful. He fought through it, but we’ll get a chance to look at him tomorrow.”

Before leaving the game, Thompson completed 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards and was sacked five times. It was his fourth career start.

McDaniel didn’t specify the plan for next week if Thompson can’t play in the Dolphins’ home game against the Tennessee Titans. The team also signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad last week, but he was inactive for Sunday’s game as the emergency quarterback.

Boyle’s Effort Falls Short

Boyle completed 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards and added a 6-yard scramble. He came close to leading the Dolphins to their only touchdown but fell short after throwing an incomplete pass on fourth down at Seattle’s 2-yard line.

“It’s an attitude game. Go out there, we’re down a couple scores. But you got to go out and prove what you’ve got,” Boyle said. “It builds a lot of character as a person, as a competitor. I’m glad we put a couple drives together. Obviously, we got stopped there on fourth down at the goal line. When you’re struggling like that, you’re trying to find completions, you’re trying to find positive yards and put a drive together.”

Tagovailoa’s Return Unclear

Tagovailoa will miss at least three more games after suffering a Week 2 concussion. Per NFL rules, players on injured reserve must sit out at least four games, though his exact return date remains uncertain. McDaniel has insisted that there is no set timeline for Tagovailoa’s return, as the focus remains on his recovery. He was able to travel with the team to Seattle but remains in concussion protocol.

In addition to Thompson’s injury, cornerback Kendall Fuller left Sunday’s game with a concussion, and left tackle Terron Armstead exited due to an eye injury.
