As the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp is about to start, Russell Wilson is getting ready to lead the training camp. The veteran quarterback was one of the first players to get to Saint Vincent College early on Wednesday and he can’t wait to be the leader of the team and help the offense.

Wilson said,

“I look at it as I’m supposed to lead us the way we’re supposed to. Leading at the highest level is something I know how to do. I just want to be my best everyday. I think it’s our team, it’s our opportunity to win. It’s our opportunity to do what we want to accomplish and that’s my focus.”

Wilson’s Leadership Role

Training camp excitement

Looking back on his past experiences, Wilson said the excitement of being away for training camp is different from the 10 years he spent with the Seattle Seahawks as he describes the camp training with the Seahawks as always ‘right there’.

He said,

“I’m excited to get in the playbook and I’m excited for the time with the fellas, for the camaraderie in the locker room. I’m excited for the fans. I haven’t experienced that part yet, really. Obviously, you’re walking around and all the fans are in Steelers gear and everything else, but to actually be here and to have that experience, it’s game time, you know? It’s that time to get ready to play some football.”

That’s the kind of enthusiasm that shows he’s all about building team chemistry and getting ready for the season.

New faces and changes

The Steelers have 16 public practices, including the “Friday Night Lights” practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on August 2. The final open practice is August 14.

The first practice, open to the public, is at 10:30 am, and the first practice with pads will be on July 30. This schedule shows that the team is ramping up their preparations and taking them very seriously.

Wilson will be the key to the team bouncing back from last year’s playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills

Wilson is not the only new face in the team. The Steelers have overhauled their roster with the signing of linebacker Patrick Queen who was a former player for the Baltimore Ravens and the hiring of Arthur Smith who was a former player for the Atlanta Falcons as the new offensive coordinator. All of this is to make the team more competitive this year.

As Wilson gets ready to lead the team, he’s certainly got the Steelers set up for a good camp. Now it’s up to him to lead the team well in the upcoming season. The fans are anxiously waiting to see what he will do on the field.
