Houston Rockets basketball player, Kevin Porter Jr., is facing serious charges after an incident at a hotel in New York City. Prosecutors say that he allegedly hurt his girlfriend, Kysre Gondrezick, causing her to have a fractured neck bone and a cut on her right eye.
Legal Proceedings
Porter, who is 23 years old, has pleaded not guilty to charges of hurting his girlfriend. This happened at the Millennium Hilton Hotel near the United Nations building in Manhattan. Prosecutors say that he didn’t stop until Gondrezick ran out into the hallway, bleeding.
Porter has been released from police custody after posting $75,000 bail, but he’s been told to stay away from Gondrezick. This is a serious domestic violence case, according to Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Mirah Curzer.
Curzer mentioned that there have been previous incidents where Porter harmed Gondrezick, including one where he crashed his car into hers.
Porter is scheduled to appear in court in Manhattan on October 16. The Rockets have preseason games around that time, and the regular season starts a couple of weeks later.
Kysre Gondrezick’s Account
Gondrezick told the police that Porter punched her repeatedly in the face, causing cuts and bruising. She also said he squeezed her neck, making it hard for her to breathe and leaving bruises.
Hospital tests showed that Gondrezick, who is 26 years old, had a broken bone in her neck.
The Rockets’ Response
The Rockets have stated that they are gathering information about the situation but have not made further comments.
Background on Individuals
Gondrezick, who was the fourth pick in the 2021 WNBA draft, played for the Indiana Fever for one season and is currently a free agent. She is also an actress and model.
Porter has been in the NBA for four seasons but has had both on-court success and off-court issues. Last year, he signed a lucrative four-year extension with the Rockets.
In November 2020, while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Porter was arrested for having a loaded gun and marijuana in his car after a crash. He claimed he didn’t know the gun was there, and the charges were eventually dropped.
Porter, who was a first-round draft pick in 2019, was traded from the Cavaliers to Houston after an incident where he got upset with the Cavaliers’ general manager over his locker.
In April 2021, he was fined $50,000 by the NBA for violating COVID-19 rules by going to a strip club. In January 2022, the Rockets suspended him for a game after an argument with the coach at halftime.
