nfl preseason

After enjoying an impressive Chicago Bearspreseason win over the Buffalo Bills, I took a quick look at other things happening in the first week of NFL preseason action. Here are just a few thoughts.

Who will Patrick Mahomes throw to this season?

A related question is, “Does it matter?” Mahomes has done a remarkable job of working with a group of less than elite receivers. This seemed to be the offseason when the Chiefs would upgrade the position. And they did make strides in that direction. Still, there are questions.

Will Travis Kelce be the Travis Kelce of the past? Kelce will be 35 this season and is coming off his least productive season in years. It’s reasonable to worry about age and off the field activity of Travis affecting his production.

In addition, Rashee Rice has legal issues hanging over his head. There appears to be a good chance he will face a suspension sometime this season, so Rice and the Chiefs have that hanging over their heads. But the Chiefs were preparing for those possibilities.

For example, the Chiefs signed free agent WR Hollywood Brown. That seemed like a good idea. However, Brown left Saturday’s game with the Jaguars after suffering a dislocated clavicle. According to Andy Reid, Brown will miss some time. Fortunately, the Chiefs drafted Xavier Worthy.

Worthy started Saturday’s game but wasn’t targeted. Of course that doesn’t mean a lot, but Chief’s fans will probably feel better when they see if Xavier is Worthy of staring for them.

Caleb Williams wasn’t the only rookie QB who looked good

Commanders’ rookie QB, Jaden Daniels, led the team to a TD in his only drive. He was 2-3 passing for 45 yards. He also ran for three yards and a TD.

Vikings rookie QB, J. J. McCarthy led the Vikings to a 24-23 win over the Raiders. McCarthy threw for two TDs with one interception. Obviously, McCarthy wasn’t up against the Raiders first defensive unit but still looked good.

Another rookie QB who made a good impression with his team was the Broncos’ Bo Nix. Nix was 15-21 with one TD and 125. He also rushed for 17 yards on three carries.

There will be more focus on non-QB rookies soon.
