José Ramírez blasted three home runs in the Cleveland Guardians‘ home game against the Boston Red Sox.
Promises of what was to come filled the air as the first home run came in the form of an echoing solo shot in the first inning. It was followed by a two-run homer in the third. That one just happened to be the 200th home run of his career.
Ramírez wasn’t just spectacular at the plate. The third baseman made a memorable play as the ball was grounded his direction and went spinning toward the foul line just past the bag. He scooped it up and with his momentum carrying him in the opposite direction somehow still made an impressively accurate throw to first base. Despite being called safe at first, the call was challenged and overruled.
A hanging slider left for doom
To lead off the sixth inning against longtime former Guardian Corey Kluber, it was none other than Ramírez. After a nice battle at the plate followed by a hanging slider left for doom, the third home run was launched into the dusk. It was a solo shot, and the first three-run home run game of his career. He also did it in his first three at bats. His team rallied behind him following the blast. They had eight consecutive hits in that sixth inning.
Having no sympathy for his poor outing, Red Sox manager Alex Cora left Kluber in to absorb the damage. After losing Chris Sale once again to injury, they are still regrouping in the rotation.
The Guardians’ outstanding night meant they won the game 10-3 and also took the series from the Red Sox. They remain in second place and a game and a half back from the Twins. They’ll meet the Astros for the first game of their weekend series Friday night.
