The All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward recently stated that his goal is to retire as a Steeler, but just a week ago, he caused a stir among fans by mentioning that he might have to consider playing for another team if a deal can’t be reached in Pittsburgh.
Heyward made a completely crazy speech when talking to The Athletic. “I have talked to my wife, and we know the reality, and we have had those talks, and she said it could be fun to play somewhere else. “If that is what needs to be done, then so be it.”
Hayward also offered this possibility, making fans of the black and gold a little green. “I still have family in Cleveland . . . my wife is from Cleveland. We will see. I am not trying to think about all that right now.” This didn’t sit right with a lot of fans. The thought of having Heyward leave Pittsburgh is saddening, but for him to mention going to their arch-rivals is plain wrong.
The backlash from fans was so much that he had to run to X and clarifiy himself. There, he said once more that he wants to end his career as a steeler. Now, everything is on hold with training camp very near.
Ongoing Negotiations For Heyward
Heyward stayed away from a large chunk of the offseason program as he tried to get an extension on a contract that pays $16 million this year. With or without a new deal from the Steelers, he won’t be calling it quits after 2024. Heyward said: “I don’t even know which way to even lean,” “We will see what happens. But I can assure you this: I will be playing in 2025, I will tell you that”
Despite the slow negotiations, Heyward has claimed that he wants to retire as a Steeler. However, if another team offers him what he wants now, there is no point in forcing the issue. The fans, however, will be really upset to see a Steeler legend wearing another team’s helmet. In the end, nothing can be done about it, and the final decision is still pending.
A Steelers Legend
Heyward have created a legend in Steel City
Heyward is a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro with 80.5 career sacks. He has been a leader and a consistent force for the Steelers’ defence, which finished sixth in points allowed. However, he did suffer a serious groin injury in 2023, resulting in a six-game absence and his lowest sack total (2.0) since his second year in the league.
The Steelers will need to take these factors into account if they want to let him go, especially considering they don’t have an appropriate replacement. We’ll see how it all plays out as the season draws closer.
