At just 22 years old, Skenes will become the fifth rookie pitcher in MLB history to start the Midsummer Classic. Skenes received the news on Friday from NL manager Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who surprised him during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show. “That’s unbelievable,” Skenes said. “That’s awesome.”

The former LSU star has burst onto the scene in his rookie season, posting a 6-0 record with a 1.90 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 66.1 innings over 11 starts. After throwing seven hitless innings with 11 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, Skenes earned selection for the All-Star start, tying Mark Fidrych (1976) for the fewest career starts before an All-Star start. Furthermore, it marked the second time this season he exited an outing without allowing a hit.
Lovullo’s Praise for Skenes
“So well deserved,” Lovullo told Skenes. “We’re super excited to make this announcement. You represent so many great things that this game craves. It’s such a great story the way you’ve come on the scene, the way you’ve done it with such humbleness. It’s noticeable. I’ll be honored to be your manager and I’m going to be honored to be watching you throw your first pitch.”
Skenes’ Place in History
However, Skenes will be the first former LSU pitcher to draw a starting assignment in an All-Star Game. Additionally, he joins an elite group of rookie starters that includes Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976), and Dave Stenhouse (1962).
