Another week of Buckeye State baseball as teams across Ohio round third and head down the home stretch!
Ohio State (12-35, 4-23 in the Big Ten)
Ohio State’s game on Tuesday against Ohio was rained out, which is unfortunate because Ohio was 11-34 and Ohio State was 11-33, so there was a chance the Buckeyes might have secured a much-needed win. The Buckeyes tied the program record for the most losses in a season when they dropped their Friday night game against Northwestern at Wrigley Field, losing 12-2. Surprisingly, the Buckeyes evened the series on with an 11-6 win. Ohio State quickly reverted to form on Sunday, losing the series with a 17-2 defeat. The Buckeyes will finish their regular season this week with a visit from Butler on Tuesday, followed by a weekend series in Columbus against Illinois.
Cincinnati (29-22, 14-13 in the Big 12)
Cincy had a good pit stop on their way to Fort Worth, beating Oral Roberts 10-2 in Tulsa before they battled TCU. The Bearcats dropped game one against TCU on Friday night, 17-11. Game two was a heartbreaker as TCU walked it off with a 7-6 win. UC stopped the sweep, though, with a 9-8 win on Sunday. Cincinnati was carried by another fantastic star this week (last week was Kerrington Cross) in Tommy O’Connor.
The Bearcats will finish their regular season with a visit from the Indiana Hoosiers and a weekend series in the Queen City against the Kansas State Wildcats.
Xavier (30-23, 14-7 in the Big East)
The X-Men fell Friday night in Omaha, 6-3, to Creighton. Saturday was a one-run game but still a 6-5 loss for Xavier. Sunday the Muskies salvaged what they could of the series with a 4-2 win. The regular season conference crown is out of reach, but Xavier will be a top-three seed in the Big East tournament.
First, this week, Xavier will finish their regular season with a series this weekend at Penn State
Dayton (25-27, 13-14 in the Atlantic 10)
The Flyers battled Fordham in the Big Apple on Friday and fell in a heartbreaker, 6-5, in extra innings. They suffered another loss on Saturday afternoon, 6-4. Dayton stopped the sweep on Sunday, though, with an 8-3 win. Dayton will close out their regular season with a home weekend series against St. Bonaventure this weekend. The Flyers will need a strong showing or as of now they will be the first team in the conference out of the seven-team A10 Tournament.
Wright State (32-16, 23-4 in the Horizon League)
The Raiders took game one on Friday against Northern Kentucky, winning by the score of 7-1. NKU struck back with a 6-4 win on Saturday, ending Wright State’s six-game winning streak. The Raiders took the series though with a 4-1 win over the Norse on Sunday.
Wright State will travel to northeast Ohio on Tuesday for a game against Kent State before closing out their regular season with a series at Purdue-Fort Wayne.
Youngstown State (14-36, 11-16 in the Horizon League)
The Penguins lost their midweek road game against Toledo. The weekend was more of the same as YSU lost 13-3 to Oakland (Mich). On Saturday, the Penguins snapped their six-game losing streak with a 13-12 shootout win over Oakland. On Sunday, they took the series from Oakland with a 4-1 win. It’s always good when a team from Ohio beats a team from that state up north.
YSU’s last week of the regular season begins at Akron before finishing with a weekend series at Northern Kentucky.
Ohio (12-36, 7-20 in the MAC)
Ohio’s Tuesday night matchup against Ohio State was cancelled due to weather. Friday night, they upset Ball State (one of the leading teams in the conference) by the score of 5-4. Ball State tied the series on Saturday with a 10-5 win. They took the series on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Ohio. The Bobcats play their final series of the regular season on the road against Western Michigan at the end of the week.
Kent State (34-15, 21-6 in the MAC)
The Golden Flashes got their series against Western Michigan off to a good start, winning 6-5, on Friday. Kent State busted the Broncos on Saturday with a whopping 16-4 victory. The Golden Flashes completed the sweep on Sunday, with a 10-9 walk off win. Kent State has won six of their last seven games and are in first place in the MAC.
Kent State will finish their regular season this week with a home game against Wright State before a weekend series on the road against Eastern Michigan.
Akron (16-34, 9-21 in the MAC)
The Zips rough year continued with a loss to Miami (Ohio) on Friday. The Redhawks beat Akron again on Saturday. They fell again on Sunday, as Miami completed the sweep. Akron will host Youngstown State and Mercyhurst to wrap up their regular season this week.
Miami (Ohio) (30-20, 21-6 in the Big Ten)
The Redhawks had a great road trip to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday and brought home an 11-1 win. They kept their winning ways going on Friday with a 9-5 win over Akron. The Redhawks nearly repeated themselves with an 8-5 win over the Zips on Saturday. Miami completed the sweep with a 5-0 win. Miami is now tied with Kent State for first place in the MAC and have won seven of their last eight games.
Miami will finish their regular season this week with a series at Ball State that will go a long way toward crowning the MAC regular season champs.
Toledo (25-27, 14-13 in the MAC)
The Rockets crushed Youngstown State on Wednesday with a huge 12-1 win. Toledo dropped game one of their series against Northern Illinois on Friday, 4-2. They bounced back on Saturday, though, with an 8-2 victory. They finished taking the series on Sunday with a 5-3 win. The Rockets have won five of their last six games.
Toledo will host Bowling Green on Tuesday and Central Michigan at the end of the week to finish their regular season.
Bowling Green (31-19, 17-10 in the MAC)
Bowling Green beat Butler at home on Wednesday, 9-7. They then got blown out by Notre Dame on Friday, 10-0. Things didn’t get any better on Saturday as they again lost by ten, 11-1. The Falcons kept it closer but suffered a sweep with their 4-0 loss. The Falcons will finish their regular season with a Tuesday game against Toledo before a weekend series at home against Northern Illinois.
