Michigan State University has sent a letter to head football coach Mel Tucker, stating their intention to end his contract due to misconduct. This decision follows allegations of sexual harassment and a thorough investigation.

Mel Tucker’s Allegations and Investigation

The letter, written by athletic director Alan Haller, outlines what the university sees as “unprofessional and unethical behavior.” Tucker has been suspended without pay after these allegations came to light in media reports.

Brenda Tracy’s Complaint

Sexual assault awareness speaker Brenda Tracy filed a complaint against Tucker, claiming he made unwanted advances and misbehaved during a phone call. Tucker admitted to some of these actions but asserted they were part of a consensual relationship.

Termination for Cause

Michigan State clarified that Tucker will face termination for cause unless he disputes the grounds within seven days. Tucker has a significant contract with over $79 million remaining, and the university aims to fire him to avoid paying.

Harlon Barnett, a longtime MSU assistant, is now serving as interim coach, with former Spartans coach Mark Dantonio in a consulting role.

Reasons for Firing Mel Tucker

Haller explained the university’s reasoning for firing Tucker in the letter, citing breaches of his contract due to inappropriate comments and behavior. Tucker’s public statement was also deemed a contract violation.

Haller asserted that Tucker’s actions damaged the school’s public image and breached his contract’s “moral turpitude” clause, especially considering Tracy’s role in educating student-athletes about preventing sexual misconduct

Upcoming Hearing and Timeline of Events

Michigan State has scheduled a hearing on October 5 and 6 to determine whether Tucker violated the university’s policies, despite the termination.

The allegations first arose in December 2022, leading to an investigation. Tucker admitted to some of the behavior during an interview in March, which contributed to his suspension.

Michigan State is investigating the leak of Brenda Tracy’s name and has hired Jones Day law firm for the inquiry.
