Maryland baseball has been crowned the champions of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament. The Terrapins had an exciting season, and it was worth it. Now being the victors they will automatically make the NCAA College Baseball tournament as well in the Winston-Salem Regional. Here is a look back on Maryland’s 2023 season and how they became the Big Ten champions this year.
Maryland Baseball Regular Season
Maryland’s team had by far the best season among all Big Ten teams. The Terps ended the regular season with a 41-19 overall record and a 17-7 conference record. Of the Big Ten teams, Maryland did not win against Iowa, Rutgers, Ohio State, Purdue, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Penn State. There was only one loss per each team that is on this list, according to Maryland Athletics. The way that their season demonstrated success, it is no surprise that they are Big Ten champions.
While Indiana only lost one more game than Maryland baseball, the way the Terps dominated the season demonstrated their strength. It was clear that moving forward they would be the team to beat.
The Big Ten Tournament
The first game was against Michigan State. Going into the game, Maryland baseball was the expected winner, as they were the highest seed playing the lowest seed. The Terps won the game 3-2, which was closer than originally expected. They next faced the Nebraska Huskers.
These two actually ended up facing each other twice, with Maryland baseball winning both games. In the first matchup, the game ended up being 10 innings, with the Terps taking a 2-1 win. This is another example of the game being closer than expected. The second time the two teams met, Maryland won 4-2.
The final game of the Big Ten tournament was a big faceoff. While Maryland was the number one seed, the Iowa Hawkeyes were three. The tournament ended up working out so the two teams among the top three would face each other. This Maryland baseball team became champions by achieving a 4-0 win on Sunday, May 28th.
Next up for the Terps will be the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional. Maryland will face Northeastern on Friday, June 2nd. The game will take place at David F. Couch Ballpark in North Carolina. This gives the Maryland baseball team a chance to rest before pushing into the next tournament. Maryland was also selected as the number two seed in the Winston-Salem Regional, which is great news for the Terps.
