In a surprising statement, Luis Rubiales, the head of Spanish soccer, said he won’t quit as the boss of Spanish football on Friday. This comes after a wild week that began with him giving an unwanted kiss to Jennifer Hermoso, which stole the spotlight from Spain’s Women’s World Cup win.
Meeting Chaos: Rubiales Shocks Everyone
Rubiales was supposed to step down officially at today’s meeting, at which he was called hastily to discuss the kiss incident. They even had a meeting in Madrid on Wednesday to pick his replacement. But then Rubiales stunned everyone when he took the stage
He said, “I’m not leaving, I’m not leaving, I’m NOT leaving.”
During his spirited speech, Rubiales not only refused to step down but also offered coach Jorge Vilda a new four-year contract, despite their ongoing issues.
“You deserve it, Jorge. We’ve been through a lot. I’ve always said you’re one of the best women’s football coaches in the world. Honestly, you’re the best.”
Rubiales’ inappropriate behaviour happened when Hermoso got her medal in Sydney, Australia, and it sparked demands for his removal. At first, he called the criticism “idiocy,” but later, he said he was sorry. Many thought his apology wasn’t enough. Soccer players, politicians, and some clubs in Spain all called for him to resign.

Rubiales’ Defense and Apology
Rubiales defended himself by saying the criticism was “fake feminism.” He described the kiss as a “peck” and said it was “spontaneous, mutual, and consensual.” He claimed he kissed Hermoso like he would kiss his own daughter.
Ongoing Women’s National Team Protest
His decision not to resign comes during an ongoing protest by the women’s national team against the federation and coach Jorge Vilda. Fifteen players refused to join the national team in September 2022, citing a bad environment. Some eventually came back, but seven players, including Mapi Leon, are still protesting.
Uncertain Future for the Spanish Soccer Federation
Before this surprising twist, the Spanish government had threatened to step in if Rubiales didn’t resign. Now, it’s uncertain what will happen next.
