After 13 successful seasons with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson is starting a new chapter in his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson, a 5-time All-Star and 4-time NBA champion, has expressed his eagerness for this “fresh start” and the opportunity to be “rejuvenated” by joining a new team.
The Warriors have vowed to retire Thompson’s No. 11 jersey, honoring his significant contributions to their dynasty that included four NBA titles. However, Thompson recognized that it was time to close that chapter of his career after contract negotiations with the Warriors stalled.
“Coming here is just such a fresh start,” Thompson said during his introductory press conference with the Mavericks. “Feeling just wanted again, like I bring great value, it just gets me excited to go out there and even work out after this press conference and get shots up.”
Joining Forces with Doncic and Irving
In Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson will team up with young superstar Luka Doncic and veteran Kyrie Irving, forming a formidable trio. The Dallas Mavericks reached the NBA Finals last season before falling to the Boston Celtics, and Klay Thompson believes he can help the team “get over the hump” and capture a championship.
“I look forward to just kind of being rejuvenated here — a lot of good basketball left in the tank,” said the 34-year-old Thompson. He signed a 3-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks, turning down more lucrative offers elsewhere.
Moreover, Thompson is excited about the potential for open scoring opportunities playing alongside Doncic and Irving, two elite playmakers who can create shots for him. “I don’t think you can stick to me as much as you could in the past with guys like Luka and Kai out there,” he said.
Embracing a New Role and Number
After missing significant time due to injuries, Thompson experienced a challenging season with the Warriors in 2023-24, coming off the bench for the first time in his career. His three-point shooting percentage dipped to 38.7%, the second-lowest of his career.
In Dallas, Thompson is eager to recapture his past form and contribute to the team’s success. He will wear jersey No. 31, a nod to his childhood idol Reggie Miller, as he aims to climb the all-time three-pointers made leaderboard.
“I’m just excited. I still think I can do what I’ve been able to do, and it’s just about being in the best shape I could possibly be, but I know I can help this team, whether it’s the knowledge I’ve gained or big scoring nights,” Thompson said.
The Dallas Mavericks are banking on the experience of Klay Thompson, his shooting skills, and championship pedigree to complement their star duo of Doncic and Irving. While the team may still have defensive concerns, Thompson’s arrival represents a significant addition as they seek to return to the NBA Finals and win their first title since 2011.
