Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has not been shy about his admiration for quarterback Justin Herbert since taking the job in January. Harbaugh has praised nearly every aspect of Herbert, from his 6-foot-6 frame to his calm demeanor—even when the team got stuck in an elevator.

After Friday’s practice, Harbaugh continued to express his admiration, stating that Herbert “has it all.”

“There’s not one gene in his body I wouldn’t, like, immediately trade [for],” Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh even joked about wanting to be best friends with Herbert, adding, “If you don’t love Justin Herbert, there’s something wrong with you.”

Matching Shoes

Harbaugh’s admiration has even influenced his fashion choices. He revealed that he now wears the same Nike running shoes as Herbert, asking the team’s equipment staff for “a pair of those Justin Herbert shoes.” He showed off the sneakers, identical to those Herbert had worn earlier.

Humor and Bond

When asked which of Herbert’s abilities he’d want for himself, Harbaugh couldn’t settle on just one.

“The arm talent, the stature, the way he processes information, dissemination, his leadership ability,” he said. “I mean even the fierceness with the way he competes. I thought I was a competitor. Just the way he goes about his daily business.”

Viral Moment

The bond between Harbaugh and Herbert was on full display before the Chargers’ Week 1 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. In a viral moment, Harbaugh repeatedly hit Herbert’s shoulder pads to get him ready for the game. Herbert admitted he wasn’t expecting that level of intensity.

“I thought it was a moment to like, “Hey, let’s go get this.’ Dap up,” Herbert said. “But he hit me a couple times, and I thought that was it. And then he kept going back for more. I’ll be much better the next time.”
