New England Patriots' QB Drake Maye
While just completing his second NFL season, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye might be the next signal caller to make the Super Bowl in his second season, only to possibly never get there again in his young career.
Who else accomplished that feat before Maye? None other than former Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame signal caller Dan Marino did back in his playing days.
While Marino set the gold standard of quarterback play in his era, his career set the standard for many future young quarterbacks. Many records that Marino held are yet to be broken today.
Why Maye won’t return to another Super Bowl
Because the Patriots have to play a first-place schedule this coming season and the NFL landscape is changing, Maye, just like Marino, may never make another Super Bowl.
Additionally, Maye could break all kinds of modern-day passing records that Marino set in his day, but that doesn’t always get you to the big game.
The current New England Patriots TEAM is built only to win right now, unlike the DYNASTY built by quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.
Therefore, Maye will have a tougher time in this era to be able to make more Super Bowls.

Maye vs Marino’s 2nd year Stats
Maye’s career so far has been exceptional to watch, especially last year’s season he put up. Currently, he could be another one of the best Gen-Z quarterbacks with boomer traits.
Right now, Maye compares to a younger version of Dan Marino of the Dolphins, and for good reason. Marino made it to the Super Bowl during his second year in 1984 and lost to the then (Washington Redskins).
Similarly, Maye reached the Super Bowl in his second year, 2025, with the New England Patriots. Much like Marino, the Pats lost to the Seattle Seahawks, led by a dominant defense and run game.
Because the Patriots have to play a first-place schedule next year and the NFL landscape is changing, Maye, just like Marino, may never make another Super Bowl. Additionally, Maye could break all kinds of modern-day passing records that Marino set in his day.
Marino threw for 5,084 yards compared to Maye’s 4,394 in their second NFL seasons. Marino won with 48 touchdown passes to Maye’s 31. However, Maye beats Marino in passer rating, 113.5 to 108.9, and in a better completion percentage, 71.9% to 64.2%. Both quarterbacks ended up tying for having the longest streak of (10) games of an 80+ passer rating in a win for a player under 24 years of age.
Only time will tell what happens to Maye. However, in my opinion, the young, charismatic quarterback won’t be seeing a Lombardi trophy anytime soon.
