The New York Yankees are fighting for a wild-card playoff spot in an American League filled with parity. With the captain, Aaron Judge, finally coming off the IL, the club cannot afford to have players placed there.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt was unable to suit up for last Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. He hurt himself in Tuesday’s match-up, and hopefully, he will be able to stay off the IL and return to first base.

Winning Series/Hopefully not losing First Baseman

The Bombers won their opening series in August. They began the month by taking 2 out of 3 games from the Minnesota Twins. While they only lead the Cleveland Guardians by one game, the team will have to step it up in the final six weeks of the regular season to clinch the third wild-card position.

Goldschmidt left the game on Tuesday and didn’t return on Wednesday. The valued athlete attempted to chase down a foul ball by Byron Buxton in the third inning of a 9-1 win by the Bombers.

Goldschmidt exceeded the ball along the dirt path near the Yankee tunnel and slid before making the grab on the grass while falling over. He remained in the game and smacked a double in the seventh inning before being removed with the Yanks up eight runs.

Manager Aaron Boone said after the game that Goldschmidt hurt his knee catching a pop-up. He indicated that it “could be day to day, could be IL, we’ll see in 24 hours.”

Goldschmidt’s Reaction

Goldschmidt explained that he would like to avoid the IL with a “short-term” absence. The 37-year-old may only be on a one-year contract, but he was playing over Ben Rice due to his contact-hitting and getting on base constantly. In addition, his 110 hits are suitable for third best on the team.

However, Rice has been outstanding for the team in his second season. He can play three different positions when asked, and play them well. With Goldschmidt in the lineup, it opens up the opportunity for Rice to play catcher, with Austin Wells struggling. He is only batting .206/.264/.408 with 15 homeruns, 56 RBIs in 94 games played.

Final Thoughts

Now, the cupboard is bare at first base. They already lost Amed Rosario and Austin Slater, and thank heavens they’re just rental players.

The positive though is that they can keep Rice there, or get some help from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. They could look at (1B) T.J. Rumfield or (OF) Spencer Jones to make their big league debuts. Jones would be used in the outfield, as Cody Bellinger would be brought in to play first base.

Let’s just hope Goldschmidt does not end up on the IL, because he’s a great veteran player that the Bombers surely need to help remain in contention in the wild card race.
