Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, has achieved unmatched success throughout his career.

From breaking records to winning numerous titles, Messi’s journey to greatness is filled with remarkable moments.

One such moment is the signing of his first-ever contract with Barcelona, which was famously scribbled on a napkin.

The Beginning of a Legend

At just 13 years old, Messi left his native Rosario in Argentina to pursue his dreams in Barcelona.

His immense talent quickly caught the attention of the Barcelona hierarchy, who were determined to sign the young prodigy.

However, the decision to sign Messi didn’t come until December of 2000.

Barcelona officials, along with those connected to the club, gathered for a crucial lunch meeting to discuss the youngster’s future.

The Napkin Contract

During the lunch meeting, Barcelona’s technical secretary, Carles Rexach, played an important role in securing Messi’s signature.

As the story goes, Rexach and Messi’s agent, Horacio Gaggioli, found themselves without any paper nearby.

However, Rexach’s determination to sign Messi led him to write out the contract on a napkin.

The contract, which was later signed by all parties present, stated, “In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000, and in the presence of Messrs. Minguella and Horacio, Carlos Rexach, Technical Secretary of F.C.B. is committed under his responsibility and despite some opinions against signing the player Lionel Messi as long as we maintain the agreed amounts.”

The napkin on which Barcelona promised to sign 13-year-old Lionel Messi will be auctioned in March for a starting price of $381,000, British auction house Bonhams said on Wednesday. (Reuters/File)

Making it Official

With the napkin contract in place, Messi began his journey through Barcelona’s youth ranks.

As a result, he refined his skills, impressing coaches and teammates alike with his natural ability and determination.

It wasn’t long before Messi made his mark on the first team, making his debut in a friendly match against Jose Mourinho’s Porto at the age of just 16 years, four months, and 23 days old.

The Auction of the Napkin Contract

Highlighting the importance of Messi’s contract on a napkin, it is scheduled for auction in March.

The British auction house, Bonhams, has announced that the starting price for the napkin will be $381,000.

Moreover, this unique piece of football history holds immense value for collectors and fans alike, symbolizing the beginning of Messi’s remarkable journey.
